Jennie Jacques never sought the comfort of easy supporting roles. In 2009 she landed on British television with unusual force for a debutante. Her performance as Annie Miller in Desperate Romantics was more than just another job (it was the moment London critics put her name on their list of talents to watch). Jacques understood that to play a Pre-Raphaelite muse she needed more than a pretty face. She brought a roughness and a truth that broke with the series' usual aestheticism.
It was her first big break.
In 2013, Jacques put on Gina Dawson's uniform in WPC 56. In this project, she carried the full narrative weight of the first two seasons, playing the first female police officer at a station in the 1950s. The average audience topped two million viewers in a time slot that did not always favor original fiction. But Jacques didn't want to get stuck in the classic police drama and set out to find projects with more demanding physical requirements.
So she moved into genre films with Shank in 2010 and Demons Never Die in 2011. These urban shoots let her explore a rawer side, far from period corsets. For her, acting has always been a matter of physical endurance, not just memorizing lines in front of a mirror.
Jacques' arrival on Vikings in 2015 marked a shift in the scale of her career. She joined in the third season to bring Judith to life, a character who in another actress's hands might have been purely functional. But she gave Judith political ambition and a vulnerability that kept her on the show until 2019. Judith survived three different kings and became one of the most complex figures in Michael Hirst's scripts.
The shoot in Ireland was exhausting. Jacques spent hours in the rain and in extreme weather conditions filming the scenes at the court of Wessex. That toughness showed in her eyes. In 2017 her character was no longer the frightened young woman of the early episodes. She had become a strategist capable of brutal decisions to protect the bloodline of her son Alfred.
Jacques was never the same after that shoot.
During the production years of Vikings, the actress balanced her work with smaller projects such as The Delivery Man in 2015. But her energy was devoted to developing Judith. The physical commitment the series demanded ended up taking a toll on her health in a way nobody expected on set.
In 2019, Jacques began experiencing serious health problems after contracting a viral infection. What seemed like a normal recovery process turned into myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). The condition changed her priorities and her ability to handle sixteen-hour shoot days. In 2020, she decided to use her public platform to raise awareness of this chronic illness that affects the nervous system and is often overlooked by traditional medicine.
The risk was obvious.
Despite her limitations, Jacques took on the role of Amber Saunders in London Kills between 2019 and 2022. It was an exercise in professional willpower at a time when her body was telling her to stop. Her focus, however, was no longer just on acting. In 2021, she became one of the most active voices for the ME Association in the UK, raising funds for biomedical research.
In 2023 Jacques focused her efforts on producing and developing scripts that reflect realities rarely seen on screen. Her Instagram account and public appearances became a diary of resistance and science outreach. The actress has raised more than £10,000 in various micro-patronage campaigns for the study of chronic neuroinflammation. On May 12, 2024, she took part in World Awareness Day for immune diseases with a technical talk on mitochondrial dysfunction.
