Hee-jeong didn't start her career on the high-tech sets of Gangnam. Her eye was shaped at the Lodz National Film School in Poland, the same place where names like Polanski and Kieslowski learned their craft. That European foundation explains why her films bear no resemblance to the commercial standard of South Korean cinema.
She doesn't chase easy applause.
After years of study, she returned home with a clear idea about rhythm and silence. In 2007, she premiered The Wonder Years. It was a dry debut about adolescence that avoided any trace of sentimentality. European critics saw in her an author capable of filming loneliness without the need for explanatory dialogue.
In 2012, she shot Grape Candy. The script focused on wounds from the past and how women handle shared secrets. It was a small production but technically very precise. Hee-jeong prefers the camera to observe from a respectful distance. She isn't interested in invading the actor's space; instead, she lets the atmosphere dictate the emotion of the scene.
And the gamble paid off.
But it was in 2020 that she delivered her most ambitious work to date with A French Woman. The film uses a fractured narrative structure to tell the story of a woman's return to Korea after decades living in Paris. Time jumps happen within the same shot. There are no effects or signposts for the viewer.
Editing is the only engine of memory.
In 2023, she decided to adapt a story by writer Kim Ae-ran for her film Where Would You Like to Go?. It's a drama about loss that steers clear of easy tears. The story moves between Warsaw and South Korea, because grief doesn't recognize national borders or passports.
The director filmed the Poland scenes in a greyish light that reinforces the protagonist's sense of isolation. There were no big media displays. The shooting crew was kept small to maintain intimacy on set and let the performances feel as natural as possible.
Hee-jeong's cinema is a matter of endurance.
The production of this latest feature was completed on a tight budget and a shooting schedule that didn't exceed five weeks of actual work. Sound post-production was wrapped in just twenty days to meet international distribution deadlines.
