In 1992, Heidi Klum won a televised beauty contest in Germany among 25,000 contestants. It was not the start of a conventional runway career, since her physique (more athletic and commercial than the standard of the time) clashed with the demands of Paris and Milan. But Klum quickly understood that the real money was in advertising, not haute couture.
After moving to the United States, her luck changed for good. In 1997, she walked the runway for Victoria’s Secret for the first time, and just a year later she was on the cover of Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue. That 1998 photo took her from the fashion niche into living rooms all across America.
Nobody believed in the format.
Unlike her generation's peers, Klum did not settle for photo shoots. In 2004, she launched Project Runway as executive producer and host. The show broke down the barriers between fashion and mass entertainment (running for 16 seasons under her leadership) and earned her an Emmy in 2013 after several consecutive nominations.
The industry didn't expect her to become a businesswoman. Klum used her image to build a licensing empire that ranged from jewelry to bedding lines. Klum never wanted to be just a clothes hanger for other designers' work. So in 2006, she took the reins of Germany’s Next Topmodel and turned the show into a ratings phenomenon that still leads the German market.
In 2013, she joined the judging panel of America’s Got Talent. Her role there was not that of a variety expert but of a brand capable of attracting advertisers. Television made her immortal.
And it worked.
Her talent for spectacle reached a new level with her Halloween parties. What began as a private gathering in 2000 grew into a global marketing operation. Klum uses film prosthetics and special effects equipment to transform herself every October 31. The costume is her best return on investment.
In 2020, she launched Making the Cut on Amazon Prime Video alongside Tim Gunn. The project combined entertainment with instant shopping, letting viewers buy the designs they saw on screen right away. It was a smart technical move that showed she understood the new digital way of consuming content.
But it wasn't all TV glamour. Her public image brought million-dollar deals with brands like Birkenstock and Astor. In 2022, she recorded a musical collaboration with Snoop Dogg titled Chai Tea with Heidi for the opening theme of her show in Germany. It was a purely promotional move that reached millions of streams within a few weeks.
Klum keeps a tight grip on her social media, where she has more than 11 million followers. She does not delegate communication for her major projects. In 2024, she renewed her contract for the nineteenth season of her talent show in Germany, with a screen share above 20 percent in the core demographic.
Her net worth is estimated at over 160 million dollars, thanks to her real estate investments and her portfolio of image rights.
