In the late nineties, Nick Cannon was sleeping in his car while looking for a spot in the comedy clubs of Los Angeles. He was barely 16 years old and had energy that bordered on manic. He wasn't the best comic of his generation, but he understood the business better than the veterans who shared the bill with him.
His role on the sketch series All That in 1998 gave him the keys to the youth entertainment industry. He didn't just act there. He started writing scripts and watching how production worked from the inside (an obsession that would define his later career). In 2002 he starred in Drumline, and box office returns reached 56 million dollars in the United States alone.
And the gamble paid off.
That college a cappella movie helped him shake off the child-actor label. But Cannon never wanted to be just a face on a movie poster. In 2003 he led Love Don’t Cost a Thing, and soon after he realized the real money was behind the camera. He launched his own production company to control every dollar of his projects.
In 2005 he launched Wild 'N Out on MTV. It was an improv battle format that mixed hip hop and urban comedy. Many analysts thought the show would last a couple of seasons. However, the series stayed on air for decades and built a multimillion-dollar brand with live tours and massive merchandise.
But his work hosting big-format shows gave him global star status. In 2009 he signed on to host America’s Got Talent. For eight seasons he was the bridge between the judges and the audience. At his peak with NBC, his salary reportedly topped 70,000 dollars per episode.
Managing his personal brand has always been aggressive.
In 2020 he went through his most critical moment after comments he made on a podcast led to his abrupt firing from ViacomCBS. Many thought his career was over. But Cannon issued a public apology, met with leaders of the Jewish community, and got his job back in less than a year. That damage-control move is still studied today at talent agencies in Los Angeles.
His private life often overshadows his financial achievements. Between 2008 and 2016, his marriage to Mariah Carey put him at the center of the tabloid press on a constant basis. Even after the divorce, he kept a friendly relationship with the singer and kept growing his family at a pace that keeps the American tabloids busy.
In 2021 he launched his own daytime talk show, titled The Nick Cannon Show. The show failed to attract an audience and was canceled after a single season. It was a hard blow to his business ego. But Cannon didn't stop, and he doubled down on producing TV movies and digital platform content.
He keeps a relentless work pace.
In 2024 he renewed his contract to keep hosting The Masked Singer on FOX. Ratings continue to show his ability to connect with the average American viewer. He is a tireless worker who manages his own fortune through NCredible Entertainment from its California headquarters.
By 2025, he plans to shoot two sequels to his most profitable comedy projects and open a new studio complex in Atlanta. Executive production of this content has an initial investment of 25 million dollars in private capital.
