Chi McBride stands six feet two inches tall. That kind of physical stature often condemns Black actors in Hollywood to roles as thugs or silent bodyguards. But he decided that his deep, baritone voice would outweigh his body.
He was born in Chicago in 1961, which is where his nickname comes from. Before stepping onto a television set, he spent years working for the telephone company AT&T in billing and customer service roles.
In 1992, he moved to Los Angeles with a firm determination to make it in music. He had sung gospel and played several instruments since childhood. Acting was Plan B, a way to pay the bills while he waited for a record deal that never came the way he had hoped.
And Plan B swallowed everything.
His first big break was The John Larroquette Show in 1993. There he played Heavy Gene. It was the perfect proving ground to show that a man of his size could be quick with dialogue and subtle with gesture.
David E. Kelley saw something in him that other directors overlooked. In 2000, he gave him the role of Steven Harper in the series Boston Public. For four seasons, he played the high school principal everyone wished they'd had as a teenager.
McBride never needed to shout to command respect. He made silence his greatest tool in front of the camera. His physical presence alone filled the frame without any need for showy gestures.
Bigger collaborations followed that defined his standing in the industry. In 2004, he appeared in The Terminal under the direction of Steven Spielberg. That same year, he shared the screen with Will Smith in the blockbuster I, Robot.
But television remained his natural territory.
In 2007, he took on the role of Emerson Cod in Pushing Daisies. The show was a visual fairy tale in which McBride brought the cynicism needed to keep the plot from becoming overly saccharine. His chemistry with Lee Pace and Anna Friel showed he could handle dark humor with surgical precision.
Away from the spotlight, McBride is known for an obsession that borders on the professional. He owns one of the most important sneaker collections in the world. Nike has even made exclusive models just for him, something very few people outside professional basketball can say.
In 2013, he joined the cast of Hawaii Five-0 to play Captain Lou Grover. What began as a supporting role lasted a full seven years. He filmed 160 episodes of the series before it ended for good in 2020.
The gamble paid off.
After the end of his Hawaiian chapter, he looked for shorter projects centered on situation comedy. In 2022 he starred in the series How We Roll for CBS. The story was based on the life of professional bowler Tom Smallwood, and McBride played Archie, the bowling alley owner and mentor to the lead character.
The network canceled the show after a single season of twelve episodes due to ratings in its Thursday late-night slot.
