Helen Slater signed a multimillion-dollar contract before turning twenty. In 1984, producers Alexander and Ilya Salkind were looking for a fresh face to relaunch the Krypton franchise after the physical wear and tear of Christopher Reeve. The choice was a young woman from New York who had barely appeared in a couple of low-budget TV movies.
It was a high-risk bet.
The release of Supergirl cost 35 million dollars at the time. Critics were merciless, and its U.S. box office barely reached 14 million. But Slater didn't sink with the character, and the commercial failure of the red cape didn't bury her name on casting lists in California.
In 1985, she starred in The Legend of Billie Jean. This story of youthful rebellion with an MTV music video aesthetic initially flopped in theaters. Years later, it found a massive second life on Spanish video rental shelves and became a cult title for a generation looking for less perfect heroines.
In 1986, Slater shared the screen with Danny DeVito in Ruthless People. There she showed that her style worked well with fast-paced farce and dark humor. Shortly after, she filmed The Secret of My Success alongside Michael J. Fox in 1987, playing a businesswoman in a man's world.
And then the pace of big productions slowed down.
Slater began to prioritize her musical training and theater outside the commercial circuit. In 2003, she released her first studio album, titled One of These Days. She composes at the piano and avoids electronic arrangements because she prefers a raw sound rooted in jazz and traditional American folk.
In 2005, she released Crossword, and in 2010, Shine. These music projects acted as a creative safety net during the years when Hollywood stopped calling her for lead roles in major studio films. For Slater, the industry was never an end in itself but a funding tool for her personal interests.
The comic book industry never fully let her go. In 2007, she joined the cast of the series Smallville to play Lara-El. It was a move by the producers to attract nostalgic audiences who remembered her work in the eighties.
She repeated the feat in 2015. On the CBS series Supergirl, she played Eliza Danvers, the new lead character's adoptive mother. She was paid to appear in twelve episodes spread across several seasons, and she was an active part of the fan convention circuit around the world.
The circle closed with overwhelming logic.
In 2023, she appeared briefly in The Flash, a cameo that brought back her younger look. The technical process for this appearance involved a digital reconstruction of her face using image archives from 1984 and state-of-the-art post-production tools.
