Holland Roden studied Molecular Biology at UCLA with the firm intention of becoming a cardiothoracic surgeon. But the entertainment industry in Los Angeles exerts a gravitational pull that's hard to resist for someone who had been performing in plays since childhood. In 2008, she made her debut in the series 12 Miles of Bad Road, and that shoot blew her academic plans apart.
Her casting for Teen Wolf in 2011 changed her college path to a career focused on fantasy genre work. For six seasons, she played Lydia Martin. At first, the character seemed like the typical popular high school girl with an astonishing IQ, but soon the writers transformed her into a banshee capable of predicting other people's deaths.
And the scream became her signature.
It's not common to find actresses who understand the science behind human behavior. Roden uses her training in biology to analyze her characters' motivations from an almost clinical perspective. For her, acting isn't just intuition but a process of constant psychological dissection.
After the end of her long television run in 2017, she sought out projects with a darker, more atmospheric tone. She appeared in Amazon's horror anthology Lore and in the third season of Channel Zero for the Syfy network. In 2020, she starred in Follow Me, a thriller set in escape rooms that grossed $4.5 million in international markets during the pandemic restrictions.
She's not afraid to get covered in blood if the character has a solid foundation.
In 2021, she joined the cast of Mayans M.C. to play Erin Thomas across nine episodes. That foray into crime drama let her move away from the supernatural elements that had defined her previous work. But her bond with her most devoted fans soon brought her back to her roots.
In 2023, she revisited her best-known role in the feature film Teen Wolf: The Movie for Paramount+. That same year, she explored psychological drama with Mother, May I? alongside actor Kyle Gallner. In the film, Roden plays a woman who seems to have been possessed by the spirit of her late mother-in-law.
Beyond her work in front of the camera, she has been involved in creating content and managing her own public image without excessive intermediaries. In 2023, she joined the cast of the comedy The Re-Education of Molly Singer. Her interest in technique is still evident in how she chooses scripts, as she prefers stories with a coherent internal logic (which she attributes to her scientific mindset).
So her presence at independent film festivals has been steady since 2022. In several technical interviews, Roden has said she prefers shoots with a small production crew and direct contact with the director, because she has greater control over the narrative arc in those conditions.
The film Mother, May I? was shot in just 21 days at a single location in New York City.
