O'Shea Jackson never had to imagine what a police raid sounded like. He lived in South Central, and the roar of helicopters was part of his daily routine long before the world knew him as Ice Cube.
When he decided to leave N.W.A. in 1989 over a royalties dispute, many thought his career would hit a dead end. But rap was too small a space for the volume of stories he carried in his head.
In 1991, John Singleton put a camera in front of him to shoot Boyz n the Hood. It wasn't a technical performance but a survival exercise filmed in 35 millimeter.
Doughboy wasn't a fictional character to him.
That debut grossed nearly sixty million dollars on a six-million-dollar budget. The industry realized that this guy with the furrowed brow knew how to connect with an audience Hollywood systematically ignored.
Tired of film noir always being synonymous with tragedy, he decided to write his own material. In 1995, he locked himself away with DJ Pooh to write the script for Friday in just a few weeks.
He wanted to show that in rough neighborhoods there are also people who laugh and stare off into space on a porch. The film cost three million dollars and grossed ten times that in its first year in theaters.
That hit gave him unusual clout with the major studios. He began producing his own projects under the Cube Vision label to keep suits in gray offices from telling him how a kid from Los Angeles should talk.
And then came the change of register.
In 1999, he shared the bill with George Clooney in Three Kings. It was a chaotic production where director David O. Russell came to blows with the lead, but Cube kept his cool and earned the film's best reviews.
His transformation into an actor for all audiences was confirmed in 2005 with Are We There Yet?. Many hip-hop purists accused him of selling out to the system, but the numbers at Sony told a different story.
Ninety-seven million dollars was the worldwide box office take of a family comedy that cost barely thirty million. So he repeated the formula with sequels and TV series that milked the profitability for a full decade.
In 2014, he returned to action with Vaya patrulla alongside Kevin Hart. The chemistry between the tough guy and the hyperactive comedian worked so well that the franchise grossed more than two hundred fifty million dollars.
He has never stopped watching over his musical legacy from the producer's chair. In 2015 he financed Straight Outta Compton to make sure the story of his former group was told without sugarcoating from outsiders.
In 2023, he voiced the character Superfly in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Recording his voice sessions involved intensive six-hour days to capture the natural aggression of his baritone. The final budget for that production reached seventy million dollars.
