Kevin Hart wasn't born a star. Early on, at clubs in Philadelphia, he went by the name Lil Kev and performed in dive bars where the crowd showed no mercy. One night, a heckler threw a piece of fried chicken at his face while he was trying to finish a monologue.
That early rejection shaped his shark-like mindset.
His mother, Nancy, made him read the Bible every day, but she didn't know her son was using humor to survive a father addicted to crack. In 2001, he landed his first role in the series Undeclared by Judd Apatow. The show lasted one season, and Hart got back on his feet with the same old energy.
Before making action movies, he spent years taking supporting roles in comedies such as Scary Movie 3 in 2003. They were paycheck jobs that funded his true passion for the stage. But the Hollywood studio system didn't know what to do with a five-foot-five guy who yelled too much.
In 2011, he produced his own comedy special, Laugh at My Pain, after being turned down by the major TV networks. He invested his own money because no one believed he could fill stadiums.
The tour grossed 15 million dollars in just ninety days.
From that moment on, movies stopped seeing him as a funny sidekick and started treating him as a financial asset. In 2014, he starred in Ride Along alongside Ice Cube, and the box office exploded with 154 million in earnings. The industry realized Hart could draw crowds without expensive special effects.
But his real gold mine came when he met Dwayne Johnson. They shot Central Intelligence in 2016, and the chemistry was so profitable that Hollywood turned them into a recurring duo. Then came the phenomenon of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in 2017, which surpassed 960 million in global box office earnings.
Hart stopped being just an actor and became a corporation.
In 2018, he stepped down as host of the Oscars over old social media posts that sparked a massive reputation crisis. It was his first major public setback. A year later, in 2019, a car accident nearly left him paralyzed after he fractured his spine in three places.
He spent months in intensive rehab to learn to walk again and reclaimed his place in the industry with a documentary series that showed his vulnerabilities. Hart understood early on that in the digital age, vulnerability also sells tickets.
In 2022, his production company, HartBeat, received an investment that valued the company at 650 million dollars.
During 2024, he released the heist movie Lift and took part in the video game adaptation of Borderlands, playing a no-nonsense soldier. It was an attempt to move away from quick jokes and try his luck in pure genre cinema.
In 2025, his schedule includes producing seven different projects under his own label and a worldwide stand-up tour. His content distribution deal with streaming platforms guarantees his presence on screens through 2030.
