Ivana Baquero picked up the Goya for Best Actress Revelation in 2007, wearing a white dress and the naturalness of someone who still doesn't grasp the scale of the media buzz. She was twelve years old and had just starred in Pan's Labyrinth under the direction of Guillermo del Toro. That film not only won three Academy Awards but also put a girl from Barcelona at the center of the global film map overnight.
Before that breakout, she had already appeared in genre projects such as Romasanta in 2004 and Frágiles in 2005. But Ofelia's story was something else entirely. The Mexican director chose her even though the original character was younger, because he saw in her gaze a maturity the script needed. That decision changed the course of her childhood and forced her to juggle schoolbooks with international promotional tours.
There was no turning back.
After the success of the film, the Spanish film industry wasn't quite sure where to place an actress who was already a star but was still a minor. So Baquero's sights turned almost naturally to the English-speaking market. In 2009, she shot The New Daughter in the United States, sharing the poster with Kevin Costner. It was her first real trial by fire in English and proof that her career wasn't going to be limited to European borders.
Many child prodigies fade away when their jaw widens and their voice changes. Baquero dodged that bullet with a strategy built on patience and academic training. For years, she selected small projects while finishing her studies at an international school in her hometown. Because film is a business of ups and downs, and she preferred to have a Plan B up her sleeve.
In 2014, she starred in El club de los incomprendidos to try to connect with teen audiences in her home country. The experiment did well at the box office, but her real breakthrough into professional maturity came from American television. In 2016, she moved to New Zealand to shoot The Shannara Chronicles. There she played Eretria for two seasons and toughened up in physical action filmmaking with grueling shooting days.
It was a purely logistical decision.
The series gave her global visibility, which Netflix soon capitalized on to bring her back to Spain. In 2019, she became Eva Villanueva in the series Alta mar. The project aimed for a classic mystery vibe on a luxury ocean liner, and she brought the composure needed to carry the weight of the plot across three full seasons. It was her definitive return to her native language after nearly a decade working mainly in English.
Unlike other peers from her generation, she never left the classroom for filming. While her face appeared on marquees across half the world, she decided to enroll in a law degree. She earned a law degree from the University of Barcelona while juggling final exams with shoots on international sets. This duality has allowed her to manage her career with a rare mental distance in the industry.
Baquero understands that the industry is a business of numbers before it is an art. In 2021, she took part in the horror film Thanksgiving alongside Bruce Campbell, looking to explore once again the genre cinema that gave her her start. She isn't afraid to return to B-movie productions if the character has an interesting arc or if the crew guarantees something new to learn.
Her name appears in the credits of the independent production Feedback, released in 2019 and directed by Pedro C. Alonso. In 2023, she stayed active on the circuit of film festivals and fantasy cinema conventions, where her role in the Del Toro film is still studied. The actress usually lives between Los Angeles and Spain, depending on the contracts she signs each season.
Filming of her latest film appearance in 2021 had an estimated budget of five million dollars.
