James Hampton served in the U.S. Army in 1950 before imagining his life would end up tied to Hollywood sets. His assignment in the armored cavalry at Fort Knox gave him the material for his first big stroke of luck. In 1965, he landed the role of Bugler Hannibal Dobbs in the series F Troop.
That awkward, absent-minded character gave him instant visibility on national television. But his ambitions went beyond military uniforms and canned laughter. Hampton understood comedic timing like few actors of his generation.
Audiences connected with his calculated awkwardness.
Their meeting with Burt Reynolds on an episode of Gunsmoke changed his work pace forever. They became close friends and collaborated on many projects over the decades. In 1974 he played Caretaker in The Longest Yard. This role was the technical turning point of his career.
Critics took notice of him, and he received a Golden Globe nomination as New Star of the Year. He managed to steal scenes from established leads with a naturalness that seemed improvised. He worked with Reynolds again in films such as W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings or The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing.
He wasn't after the spotlight so much as the efficiency of a top-tier supporting player.
In 1985, he stepped into the role of Harold Howard in the movie Teen Wolf. The film had a tiny budget, but its box office topped 80 million dollars. His role as the understanding father of a teenage werewolf gave him a new life in 1980s mainstream movies. So he repeated the experience in 1987 with the franchise's sequel.
His voice was also heard in the animated version of the story for two seasons. But Hampton felt his time in the spotlight should give way to managing shoots. He began studying scripts from the director's perspective long before making the final leap.
He directed more than 30 episodes of the series Evening Shade between 1990 and 1994. His directing credits also appear on Sister, Sister and Grace Under Fire. He wrote several television scripts and specialized in the multi-camera sitcom format. His methodology was strict and focused on making the most of production time.
The industry respected him for his ability to get complex shoots done without going over budget.
James Hampton died in 2021 at his home in Fort Worth from complications related to Parkinson's disease. He was 84 years old and was buried at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin.
