Jean Marsh was born in a working-class neighborhood of London in 1934 and ended up dining with Hollywood royalty without asking permission. Her father worked maintaining a printing press, and her mother was a seamstress at a theater. That environment pushed her toward dance classes as therapy to overcome childhood paralysis.
That physical fragility was her ticket into acting.
She started out as a chorus girl and model. But she soon realized her angular face and precise voice worked better in drama than in musicals. She traveled to New York in the fifties to try her luck, and there she learned that the film business waits for no one.
In 1971, she changed British television from the kitchen of a fictional house. Together with her friend Eileen Atkins, she came up with a series about class differences that no producer wanted to buy at first. In the end, the BBC accepted the project, and Upstairs, Downstairs was born.
She played Rose Buck herself for five seasons and won an Emmy in 1975 for that role of a loyal maid with unbreakable dignity. Marsh was never after easy fame; she wanted control over the stories told on screen.
Work always came first for her.
And the gamble paid off. The series became a global phenomenon that allowed Marsh to negotiate her contracts from a position of strength few actresses of her generation had. But she did not get stuck in period dramas.
Casting directors saw in her a cold, aristocratic gaze that was perfect for fantasy films. In 1985, she played Nurse Wilson and Queen Mombi in Return to Oz. It was a difficult shoot, and her ability to unsettle audiences was clear.
Three years later she played Queen Bavmorda in Willow. That shoot in Wales in the pouring rain defined her image for a whole generation of genre fans. George Lucas was looking for someone who could command respect through presence alone, and Marsh more than delivered.
Her career was split between prestigious theater in London and big-budget Hollywood productions.
In 2010, the BBC brought back Upstairs, Downstairs for a new chapter with refreshed scripts. Marsh returned to play Rose Buck, this time as a housekeeper in charge of guiding a new generation of staff.
But fate slowed her work pace in 2011. She suffered a cerebral infarction just before starting to film the second batch of episodes of that comeback. That medical incident drastically reduced her screen time and forced her to step back from the front lines.
The original 1970s production was sold to more than 40 countries.
