Jenette Goldstein auditioned for Aliens convinced that the movie was about illegal immigration in the United States. She showed up to the audition in heels and makeup, expecting a social drama, but ended up wielding a twenty-kilo machine gun. James Cameron was looking for someone with real physical presence, and despite the initial misunderstanding, she fit the profile of a colonial marine thanks to her physical theater training.
That role as Private Vasquez in 1986 earned her a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress. But the most significant thing was how she broke with the feminine aesthetic of the era in action cinema. She had to build muscle and darken her skin for the character, because producers wanted a look hardened by the space war.
Cameron didn't let her get away.
After her success in space, the actress became a regular collaborator of the Canadian director. In 1991 she played Janelle Voight in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, where she went from being John Connor's adoptive mother to a lethal replica of the T-1000. That shift between domestic tenderness and the coldness of liquid metal showed her ability to work on big productions without losing her restraint.
Her work in nineties cinema wasn't limited to science fiction. In 1987 she appeared in Near Dark under Kathryn Bigelow's direction, and in 1989 she joined the Lethal Weapon 2 franchise as Officer Meagan Shapiro. These were years when Goldstein alternated tough-woman roles with supporting characters in prestige dramas.
In 1997 she worked with Cameron again on Titanic, playing an Irish mother who comforts her children as the ship sinks. It was a brief scene, but she delivered one of the film's most powerful emotional moments without saying more than a line. That was her last major collaboration with the director before she focused her efforts on a completely different industry.
And the gamble paid off.
By around 2009, the actress had spotted a logistical problem affecting thousands of women and decided to found her own company. Jenette Bras was born in Los Angeles with the slogan that the alphabet starts at the letter D. She specialized in lingerie for plus sizes and moved away from the conventional clothing store concept to create a space for technical fitting advice.
Unlike other actors who try to stretch their screen presence until they're exhausted, she preferred business stability. But she didn't abandon acting entirely. In the following years she appeared in series such as Star Trek: Generations or 24, and also lent her voice to various video games from the Star Trek franchise between 2000 and 2010.
The business soon exceeded its initial expectations.
Because Goldstein understood that her personal brand didn't depend on red carpets but on the effectiveness of her product. In 2019 she made a brief appearance in the series Fear the Walking Dead, playing a character named Eddie. It was a nod to genre fans who still remembered her roles in the cult cinema of the eighties.
As of 2024, the company operates four physical stores on the West Coast and generates several million dollars in annual revenue on a steady basis. Her most recent credited appearance in a large-scale production was a voice role for an animated project in 2022. Managing her boutique chain now takes up most of her professional schedule in California.
