Jeremy Irvine had no agent when Steven Spielberg cast him to star in War Horse. He went from complete unknown to leading a Hollywood blockbuster in 2011. It was a risky bet that almost nobody in the Los Angeles studio offices understood.
Anonymity ended one day at a casting call.
Before that moment, Irvine had attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. But he left after a year because he didn't feel he fit into the academic system. His real training took place at the National Youth Theatre in London, where he learned the codes of the craft.
Riding horses and real explosions in 2011 taught him more than any acting class. Irvine refused to use stunt doubles for most of the risky scenes in that war movie. He caught a serious infection from the dirty trench water that nearly halted production for several days.
And after the world premiere, offers poured in aggressively. But the actor decided he didn't want to be just a pretty face on posters for teen audiences. He turned down roles in multimillion-dollar franchises to make independent films in the UK.
Fame was never the main goal.
He has lived with Type 1 diabetes since he was six years old. The condition has shaped the way he works, since he must closely monitor his blood sugar on set. In 2013, he took part in clinical trials testing an artificial pancreas, a pioneering development in British medicine.
In 2012, he played Pip in Great Expectations alongside Helena Bonham Carter. It was a sober adaptation that didn't chase easy praise from international critics. Irvine preferred the physical and emotional risk of characters who walk along the edge of the abyss.
He surprised the industry in 2018 when he accepted the role of young Sam Carmichael in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. Singing and dancing weren't part of his original plans, but the chance to work with Pierce Brosnan outweighed his doubts. Audiences discovered a different side of his usual range.
In 2019, he starred in the series Treadstone, based on the Jason Bourne universe. The physical training was brutal and lasted months before the cameras first rolled. He learned real combat techniques so the choreography wouldn't look like simple gym dances.
Genre projects kept coming in.
In 2024 he took the lead role in Return to Silent Hill under the direction of Christophe Gans. The project aimed to recapture the oppressive atmosphere of Konami's original video game. Irvine shot most of his scenes in dark, enclosed sets using practical effects.
He was signed in 2024 to bring Alan Scott to life in the Green Lantern series for Max. His contract requires six months of physical preparation before filming begins in Atlanta. The estimated production budget exceeds $15 million per filmed episode.
