Jing Boran won the talent contest My Hero in 2007 when they were only 18 years old. That television victory launched them into a music market that was still looking for mass idols in China. They formed the duo BoBo and sold thousands of records that are now collector's items for fans of the first wave of Mandopop.

But the stage soon felt too small for him.

In 2010, they made their film debut in Hot Summer Days. It wasn't a leading role, but it taught them that the camera demanded a different register from the one used on stage. The industry took notice of their face, because it conveyed a natural melancholy that other actors of their generation didn't have.

The Risk of the Big Screen

In 2015, they replaced Kai Ko in the blockbuster Monster Hunt after the original actor was embroiled in a legal scandal. It was a risky bet for the studio, which ended up earning more than $380 million at the box office. That figure changed their standing in the industry overnight and allowed them to choose projects with more dramatic weight.

And the gamble paid off.

Working with auteur directors changed her perception of the craft. In 2019, she shot The Shadow Play under the direction of Lou Ye. It was a chaotic, physically demanding shoot in which she played a police officer trapped in a web of urban development corruption. That film was blocked by Chinese censors for years before reaching international festivals.

In 2023, he starred in the romantic drama A Road to Home opposite Tan Songyun. The series racked up millions of views on streaming platforms thanks to a script that avoided the excesses of traditional melodrama. Critics praised his ability to hold silences on screen without the need for explanatory dialogue.

New Languages and Suspense

A year later, in 2024, they led the cast of Regeneration, a suspense thriller in which they play a man with five different identities. The story relies on a web of mirrors in which their character is never who they claim to be. It's a role that breaks away from the leading-man image they maintained during their first decade in the industry.

Audiences discovered an actor willing to get his hands dirty.

The production of Regeneration had a tight budget by Asian industry standards, but it managed to sell its international distribution rights before the premiere. Filming for all ten episodes was completed in under ninety days on locations in mainland China.
