Liverpool's Perfect Ear

Jodie Comer didn't need to go through RADA or any famous London academy to understand how fiction works. She learned to act by imitating television accents in her bedroom in Childwall. Her father worked for Everton FC and her mother worked in the city's public transport. But that working-class normality is precisely what allowed her to build characters that seem to truly breathe.

In 2011, she landed a small role in the series Justice. No one on that set suspected that the eighteen-year-old would end up winning the industry's most prestigious awards in less than a decade. Because Comer has an almost animal ability to disappear behind the gaze of others.

And the gamble paid off.

Before filming, she reads the script looking for the character's contradictions. She isn't interested in perfect women or flawless heroines. That's why she accepted the role in Thirteen in 2016, where she played a young woman who escapes a kidnapping after thirteen years of captivity. It was the first time the British specialist press put her name on its list of talents to watch closely.

Violence and the Stage

In 2018, the project that permanently changed her career arrived. In Killing Eve, she played a Russian hitwoman who spoke five languages and wore haute couture while committing atrocious crimes. Critics noticed her not for the violence of the scenes but for the physical comedy she brought to the role. In 2019, she won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, beating out far more established names in Hollywood.

But commercial film was not her only goal. In 2022, she made her West End debut in London in the play Prima Facie. It was a legal monologue in which she played a defense lawyer who ends up a victim of sexual assault. The physical demands were such that Comer lost weight at every performance due to the intensity of her movements on stage.

She won the Tony in 2023 for that same performance on Broadway.

Performing alone on stage for one hundred minutes every night gave her a confidence she later carried into her large-scale film projects. So when Ridley Scott called her to star in The Last Duel in 2021, she already knew how to carry the weight of a multimillion-dollar production on her shoulders. The shoot took place in rural locations in France and Ireland under fairly harsh weather conditions.

Comer had to shoot the same scene three times with different psychological nuances to fit the film's narrative structure.

Numbers and Mud

In 2024, she appeared in The Bikeriders as Kathy. For this role, she worked with a vocal coach to nail a very specific Midwestern American accent that had nothing to do with her natural voice. She spent weeks listening to real recordings of the woman she played so she wouldn't miss a single syllable. Her method is based more on technical observation than emotional improvisation.

Not everything in her career has been met with unanimous praise, though. The release of The End We Start From in 2023 received mixed reviews despite her physical commitment to the childbirth and survival scenes. The film earned just half a million dollars in its opening weekend in the United States. Even so, she stayed committed to British independent cinema before jumping back into major genre franchises.

Precision is her greatest work tool.

The contract for her role in the production of 28 Years Later was signed with an absolute confidentiality clause covering the script. The estimated budget for the film directed by Danny Boyle, set for release in 2025, exceeded $75 million.
