Jo Hartley had no agent or formal training when Shane Meadows cast them in Dead Man’s Shoes in 2004. They were working as a flight attendant for Virgin Atlantic, and film was a distant possibility. Meadows was looking for faces that didn't smell of an acting school, and Hartley fit that raw naturalness of northern England.
That decision changed her paycheck forever.
Her roots in Oldham shaped the way she understands her craft. She doesn't project the image of the upper-class British actress, because her energy belongs to the street and working-class neighborhoods. In 2006, she landed the role that would make her face familiar across Europe with This Is England.
She played Cynth with a restraint that avoided easy melodrama. But what mattered most was her ability to keep the character alive for nearly a decade. She appeared in the TV sequels This Is England ’86, This Is England ’88 and This Is England ’90 between 2010 and 2015.
And audiences embraced her as the unofficial mother of a broken generation.
Hartley didn't get stuck in the social drama of the islands. In 2016, she played Janette in Eddie the Eagle and shared the screen with Taron Egerton. It was a smart move to break into the mainstream commercial circuit without losing her essence as a hardworking woman. Because Hartley works best when the script lets her move between tenderness and exhaustion.
British television found in her a safe bet for mid-budget productions. Between 2018 and 2021, she worked on In My Skin, playing a mother with bipolar disorder. The shoot was psychologically demanding, but it earned her a critical respect that the industry often denies actors without formal training.
So the call from Ricky Gervais came.
In 2019, she joined the cast of After Life as June. The Netflix series was a global phenomenon, and Hartley brought a note of down-to-earth humanity amid the protagonist's cynicism. Her character didn't need grand speeches to be believable. She just needed to be there.
The streaming industry changed her pace of work. In 2021, she appeared in the series The Cleaner alongside Greg Davies, and in 2022 she shot Freegard. Her name no longer appears only in independent film credits but also in internationally recognized productions with budgets exceeding ten million pounds.
But she never abandoned the cinema of her homeland.
In 2023, she starred in Bank of Dave as Ruth. The film was based on the true story of Dave Fishwick, and Hartley once again showed her command of the role of the northern woman who keeps the home together while her man chases impossible dreams. The movie was a hit with audiences on streaming platforms for several months.
Hartley keeps a steady work routine that steers clear of unnecessary red carpets. She prefers shoots in Leeds or Manchester to offices in Los Angeles. In 2024, she worked on the production of The Woken and secured her role in Bank of Dave: The Sequel.
Filming for this second part was scheduled for 2025 on location in Burnley.
