Jolene Blalock left her home in San Diego at seventeen to walk the runways in Asia and Europe. That modeling stint gave her experience, but she wanted more than posing in front of a camera. In 1998, she landed her first episodic role on the series Veronica's Closet, and there she began to understand how the Los Angeles industry worked.
It wasn't all smooth sailing.
In 2001, she got the break that would define her public image for decades. The producers of Star Trek: Enterprise were looking for a woman who could embody the cool logic of a Vulcan officer without losing dramatic tension. Blalock accepted the role of T'Pol and spent four seasons gluing latex ears to her face every morning.
Filming this galactic prequel was exhausting. The series shot 98 episodes, and she appeared in every one of them. However, Blalock's relationship with the writers was not always smooth, since she openly criticized the lack of depth in the storylines at fan conventions.
But audiences adored her.
After the series ended in 2005, she sought out different kinds of roles in projects of varying weight. She appeared in the thriller Slow Burn alongside Ray Liotta, and returned to the military science fiction universe in 2008 with Starship Troopers 3: Marauder. That last film went straight to home video and did not have the impact she had hoped for at the international box office.
In 2010, she appeared in an episode of House and a year later starred in the feature film One Kine Day. Her screen appearances became increasingly selective and spaced out over time, because her life priorities had begun to shift in a very different direction from television sets.
The actress's personal life permanently changed her professional path. In 2003, she married Michael Rapino in a ceremony in Jamaica after she was the one who proposed to him. Her husband is the CEO of Live Nation, which freed her from the need to accept any script that landed on her desk just to pay the bills.
The Rapino Foundation focuses much of its efforts on humanitarian aid. Blalock devotes her time to philanthropic work in Africa and to raising her three children away from the Hollywood spotlight. And although science fiction fans still ask about her at every specialized event, her priority is her private life.
In 2014 she had a brief appearance in the film Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, playing the character Gwen. It was one of her last credits on record in the American film industry database.
In 2017, she appeared in the short film Alien Attack, and since then she has not set foot on a professional film set.
