Julia Ormond didn't arrive in Hollywood intending to become a celebrity. In 1994, she starred in Legends of the Fall, and suddenly her face was plastered across cities around the world. It was a risky bet by studios desperately seeking a successor to the classic style of the great European screen goddesses.
And the bet paid off for a while.
In 1995, she shot Sabrina under the direction of Sydney Pollack. It was a brave move, since comparisons with the original were inevitable and the press showed no mercy. But Ormond defended her character with a restraint that caught off guard those who expected a cheap imitation. As a result, she became the target of an industry that didn't quite know where to place her British intensity.
Before turning thirty, she had already worked with Harrison Ford and Richard Gere. But the commercial system began showing its cracks very early for her. Ormond never felt comfortable with the aggressive marketing demands of Los Angeles.
For years, many analysts wondered why an actress of her caliber vanished from the front lines so suddenly. The answer took decades to come to light. In 2023, Ormond filed a lawsuit against Harvey Weinstein and the Disney company over an assault that occurred in 1995 and that derailed her career at the height of her success.
This explains her withdrawal from the spotlight around the turn of the century. Ormond refused to play by the industry's rules, and that had immediate consequences for her contracts. So she decided to take refuge in theater and independent production to preserve her integrity.
She founded Indican Productions to produce documentaries and socially conscious works.
In 2008, David Fincher called her to take part in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. It was a quiet but powerful comeback. Ormond proved that her ability to carry the dramatic weight of a story remained intact despite the ostracism she had endured. And she did it without resorting to the usual tricks of actresses trying to win back lost fame.
Television gave her the nuance that big-budget movies denied her. In 2010, she won an Emmy Award for her performance in Temple Grandin. It was the definitive recognition of an actress who had chosen to mature away from the obligatory red carpets. But her true comeback came with the series Mad Men between 2012 and 2015.
She played Marie Calvet with a mix of elegance and cynicism that earned her an Emmy nomination for guest actress. In 2017, she took part in the miniseries Howards End, and in 2019 she starred in the drama Gold Digger for the BBC. In this project, she played a woman who falls for a much younger man and challenged the age prejudices that still prevail in British fiction.
She earned the complete respect of international critics.
In 2020, she joined the cast of The Walking Dead: World Beyond to play Elizabeth Kublek. It was a complete change of pace in which she showed a cold, military side that nobody expected from the former lead of romantic dramas. In 2023, she worked on the film Reunion under director Chris Nelson.
The lawsuit filed in October 2023 before the New York Supreme Court seeks tens of millions of dollars in economic and moral damages.
