Junji Majima entered the Japanese voice acting industry quietly in the late 1990s. His training at the Katsuta school of narration and performing arts let him debut in 2000 with supporting roles in series such as Gate Keepers. Back then the market wanted loud, flashy voices, but Majima offered something different: his tone was natural and free of unnecessary artifice.
He is a vocal method actor.
During his first years at the I'm Enterprise agency, he honed his craft playing characters who went largely unnoticed by the general public. He wasn't chasing immediate stardom, and that patience helped him understand the timing of comedy and drama without the pressure of carrying a franchise on his shoulders. In 2003, his role in Gunparade Orchestra began to hint at his ability to handle rapid-fire dialogue.
Everything changed when he landed the role of Ryuji Takasu in Toradora!. Playing a teenager with a tough-guy stare and a heart of gold demanded a balance that few actors of his generation could pull off. Majima avoided the excesses of conventional anime and opted for a restrained performance that connected with a global audience.
And the gamble paid off.
That role allowed him to specialize in the everyman archetype who reacts to the madness around him. In 2011 he voiced Ayumu Aikawa in Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? and proved he could keep up the pace of a dark comedy without losing credibility. But his career wasn't limited to high school characters, because his versatile range let him move into much darker projects.
In 2014, he took on the challenge of playing Death Gun in Sword Art Online II. It was a necessary change of register to avoid professional stagnation, a constant risk for voice actors in Japan. That distorted, menacing voice surprised casting directors who had only seen him in romantic comedy roles.
Majima's career in the video game industry has been just as consistent as his time on television. From his involvement in the Disgaea series, voicing Prinny, to his work on Utawarerumono, he has maintained a consistency that spans more than two decades of uninterrupted activity. Producers value his technical reliability and his ability to record long dialogue sessions with barely any variation in tone.
In 2017, his role in Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu as Horikawa Kunihiro showed that his voice remained competitive in a market crowded with new talent. He didn't need big personal marketing campaigns to stay active. He simply kept working with the same discipline he learned in his early days in Tokyo.
He is a long-distance runner.
Not everything in his career has been a massive hit, however. He has been part of casts in productions that passed quietly through Japanese television (an unavoidable rite of passage for any professional in the industry). Even so, his name appears in the credits of more than 150 animated productions recorded between 2000 and 2024.
His contract with the I'm Enterprise agency remains in effect after twenty-five years with the company. In 2024, he took part in five different projects, including voice work for radio programs and live events. Majima is paid by the hour for recording sessions, according to the pay scales standardized by Japan's actors' union.
