Keir Dullea has the coldest stare in science fiction. In 1968, Stanley Kubrick chose him to bring David Bowman to life, because he needed a face capable of holding minutes of absolute silence. He wasn't looking for a square-jawed hero. He was looking for an astronaut who seemed like just another part of the space machinery.
In 1962, he had already won the Golden Globe for New Star of the Year for David and Lisa. That role, as a young man with a phobia of physical contact, defined his acting style for years. Dullea became known for vulnerable or downright strange characters. That quality is what convinced Kubrick to bring him to the London set.
The shoot for the space odyssey lasted nearly three years. Dullea spent his days suspended from wires or walking through rotating corridors that made him nauseous. But he never complained. He knew he was part of something that operated by its own rules.
That movie was a golden cage.
The big problem with starring in the genre's biggest landmark is that audiences stop seeing you as an actor. You become a symbol of modernity. In 1965, he tried to break that image with Bunny Lake Is Missing, directed by Otto Preminger. It was a tense shoot: the director was a tyrant, and Dullea, a method actor, would not accept being yelled at.
His salary at the time was seven thousand dollars a week, a considerable sum for an actor who avoided studio parties. But Hollywood began to lose interest when he decided to prioritize the stage. In 1969 he made his Broadway debut in Butterflies Are Free and discovered that the stage offered a freedom the camera denied him.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1974 he appeared in Black Christmas. It was one of the first films to lay the groundwork for modern serial killer movies. Dullea played a pianist prone to fits of rage. It was a brief role, but it proved he could be a real threat on screen.
Dullea never fully retired. In 1984 he put the astronaut suit back on for 2010: The Year We Make Contact. Peter Hyams directed this sequel, which aimed to provide answers where Kubrick had only left questions. Dullea was paid more for this sequel than for the original from the 1960s.
In the decades that followed, he focused on television and independent projects. The size of the role didn't matter to him as long as the character had a real inner conflict. In 2018 he appeared in the HBO-produced version of Fahrenheit 451. His presence served as a direct link to classic science fiction.
Theater remained his main activity well into old age.
In 2022 he played Lord Hood, Fleet Admiral, in the series Halo. The production was filmed at the Korda Studios in Budapest and required the actor to endure long costume fittings to fit the futuristic military aesthetic. His role was limited to three episodes of the first season.
He wrapped up his work on the series Hunters in 2020, playing a Nazi hiding in high society. The shoot took place entirely on location in New York.
