Ken Berry wasn't looking for the cameras when he served in the United States Army Artillery. It was his regimental buddy (a young Leonard Nimoy) who pushed him to enter military talent contests. That chance piece of advice pulled him out of the mud and straight onto the sound stages of Los Angeles.
In 1965 he landed the role of Captain Wilton Parmenter in F Troop. That ABC series let him showcase a clumsy, calculated physicality that set him apart from the other TV leading men of the era. He didn't need complex scripts, because his mastery of slapstick was enough to carry the weight of the plot.
But dancing was his true obsession.
He trained under the great choreographers of Hollywood's golden age. Berry always considered himself a dancer who had accidentally ended up working as a comedy actor. That physical agility convinced Disney executives to make him one of their most profitable faces during the 1970s.
In 1974, he starred in Herbie Rides Again, facing the demands of filming with a car that had more screen presence than the humans. The movie grossed more than 38 million dollars in the United States alone. So the studio called him back in 1978 to lead the cast of The Cat from Outer Space.
He carved out his own place in rural television with Mayberry R.F.D., where he had the difficult task of replacing Andy Griffith. The pressure was enormous. But audiences embraced his friendly tone, and the show stayed near the top of the ratings until a corporate decision canceled it in 1971.
The industry typecast him as the good neighbor.
In the early eighties, he found a new home on Mama's Family, playing Vinton Harper. Over 130 episodes, Berry was the perfect counterpoint to Vicki Lawrence's energy. It was a test of professional endurance in an industry that was starting to demand much more aggressive and darker personas.
His presence in the media faded voluntarily as the traditional studio system disappeared. In 1999 he filmed his last credited work, an episode of the series Maggie Winters. He never sought a nostalgic comeback or tried to force a relevance he no longer felt was his own.
And the silence suited him well.
He spent his last years devoted to his car collection and family life, far from the red carpets. He passed away on December 1, 2018, at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank. He was 85 years old and left behind a filmography of more than sixty titles produced under the discipline of old Hollywood.
