Kendall Schmidt isn't a lab-made product, even though his face graced the folders of half of Spain for a decade.
He started at age six in cereal commercials and small roles in shows like Frasier and Gilmore Girls. He was the typical blond Kansas type that Hollywood devours and forgets within a couple of seasons. But his family moved to California with the idea of riding out the momentum and waiting for a real opportunity.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2008, he was close to giving up because auditions were becoming repetitive and unexciting. Just then, the Big Time Rush project came along, a bet by Nickelodeon to compete with the Disney Channel phenomenon. Schmidt was the last member to join the group (he came in as a replacement for another actor who didn't fit), and that gave him an advantage in negotiating his contracts.
The series required him to act, sing and dance during 14-hour days. It was no job for just anyone. The official premiere on 2010 drew 6.8 million viewers, a figure that today seems like science fiction for a cable channel.
Schmidt played the group's leader, the sensible one who kept order amid the chaos of the fictional story. But off camera, he was looking for a less processed and more personal sound. He co-founded the band Heffron Drive with Dustin Belt before worldwide fame hit him full force. It was his guitar-and-synth refuge, where he didn't have to ask executive producers for permission.
Because teen fame fades fast.
In 2013, the series ended and the band went on an indefinite hiatus. Many expected Schmidt to disappear from the map or end up on low-budget reality shows. Instead, he chose to manage his own music catalog and focus on independent production under his own label, TOLBooth Records.
Schmidt waited for the market to mature. He didn't try to force a typical pop solo career, nor did he chase scandals to stay in the headlines. In 2021, the group decided to reunite without the backing of a major TV network. It was a financial risk that they managed themselves, with complete independence.
They filled venues holding 15,000 people in cities where they hadn't played in years. The strategy worked because they understood that their audience was no longer kids, but adults with spending power looking to reclaim a piece of their childhood.
In 2023, he married Mica von Turkovich after a relationship of nearly a decade. It was a private ceremony, far from the magazine exclusives and the spotlight of Los Angeles.
In 2024, his first daughter, Maple, was born. Schmidt now balances international tours with a private home life that he protects almost obsessively. He keeps a lean cost structure on his tours to maximize the profit from every ticket sold.
The band's latest tour in 2024 generated net profits higher than those of its best years on television.
