Spencer Locke was born in Winter Park, Florida, and was already filming local commercials before turning ten. There was no lucky discovery at a shopping mall or any stroke of magical luck. Her parents noticed her interest in acting and decided to move the whole family to Los Angeles when she was twelve.
And the gamble paid off.
Her first major job came with motion capture in Monster House, released in 2006. That technology was still experimental and demanded a level of physical precision that few child actors had mastered. Locke provided the voice and movements for Jenny Bennett, a character that got her into the industry through the door of technical animation rather than live-action.
Just a year later, she landed the role that brought her international visibility in genre film. She joined the cast of Resident Evil: Extinction in 2007 to play K-Mart, a survivor in a devastated world. She wasn't the lead, but her look fit the gritty, desert aesthetic of the franchise.
She played the same character again in 2010 in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.
The industry often quickly typecasts actresses who start out in action franchises. Locke avoided that rut by seeking out projects where physical effort, rather than digital effects, drives the story. In 2019, she starred in Walk. Ride. Rodeo. for Netflix.
She played Amberley Snyder, a rodeo rider who became paraplegic after a car accident. She had to train with horses and spend time with the real Snyder to understand the mechanics of her movements. The film drew millions of viewers during its first month of worldwide release.
Her career has also included room for procedural and comedy television. She appeared in Cougar Town and lent her voice to series such as Phineas and Ferb. This ability to move between intense drama and light entertainment allowed her to maintain a steady career that many of her contemporaries lost once they reached adulthood.
The work pace never let up.
In 2018, she returned to horror films with Insidious: The Last Key. Her role as Melissa Rainier linked her to one of the most profitable franchises in modern fantasy genre films. On this project, she worked under director Adam Robitel and shared the screen with Lin Shaye, one of the institutions of today's horror cinema.
In 2023, she appeared in The Last Stop in Yuma County, a crime thriller with the feel of classic film noir. It's a low-budget production where the tension relies on dialogue and a claustrophobic staging. Locke plays Amber, a character trapped at a gas station during a botched robbery.
Also in 2023, she joined the cast of the second season of The Wheel of Time. Her role as Elayne Trakand marked her entry into one of the most expensive productions in contemporary television. The action sequences were shot mainly on location in the Czech Republic.
Sony Venice cameras with large-format anamorphic lenses were used to film the interior scenes.
