Kevin McGarry

Kevin McGarry was born in Kincardine, Ontario, in 1985. His path wasn't a stroke of luck in a shopping mall or a casual discovery in a Toronto café. He studied theater arts at Fanshawe College and later honed his craft at the ProActors Lab. Ten years of training taught him that patience is often the scarcest resource in this industry.

Theater was her first real school.

In 2011, he took to the stage at the Shaw Festival for The Three Musketeers. There he learned to project his voice and work the stage space. But Canadian television is a small industry, and McGarry had to put in years of hard work in supporting roles. In 2015, he landed a spot in the cast of Open Heart playing Dr. Timothy Hudson.

A Retreat in the Scenery of Hope Valley

His arrival on When Calls the Heart in 2019 dramatically changed his workload. Playing Nathan Grant meant dealing with the weight of characters who were no longer part of the story. Seven million viewers in the United States validated his place on the series in the seasons that followed. He is an actor who knows exactly what romantic drama audiences expect in every shot.

And the gamble paid off.

Before that project, he appeared in Heartland between 2016 and 2020, bringing Mitch Cutty to life. It's a production that demands long shoots in highly variable weather conditions. Filming in Alberta is nothing like shooting in a climate-controlled studio in Vancouver. McGarry adapted to the horses and the marathon shooting days without making a fuss.

In 2015, he had a brief appearance on Schitt’s Creek playing Caspar. It was just one episode of the first season, but it helps trace his beginnings in comedy before the series became a worldwide hit. McGarry has always kept a low profile when it comes to his professional choices.

The Romance Factory and Technical Control

His relationship with Hallmark Channel grew close starting in 2019 with Winter Love Story. In 2022, he starred in the The Wedding Veil trilogy alongside Lacey Chabert. Three movies shot almost back to back that topped basic cable ratings on their premiere nights. McGarry doesn't look down on romance, because he knows it's the genre that keeps his name on industry marquees in North America.

Not everything has been a mass-audience hit.

In 2017, he wrote and directed the short film Lucky. It was an attempt to take control of the storytelling and understand what really happens behind the director's monitor. He is drawn to the technical side of the craft. He often spends time with camera operators to understand the lenses used in each shot and how they affect natural light.

Filming for the twelfth season of When Calls the Heart was scheduled for the summer of 2025 at locations in Jamestown, just south of Langley. The production works with a tight budget that requires shooting an average of six script pages per day.
