Scott Mescudi landed in New York with 500 dollars in his pocket and a demo nobody wanted to hear. Before becoming Kid Cudi, he was a kid from Cleveland who sold sneakers and slept on his uncle's couch. But his mind worked at a different speed. In 2008, he released a mixtape that caught Kanye West's attention, and his life changed overnight. What few people knew is that his ultimate goal wasn't just the microphone.
Film was never a Plan B.
At 2010, he landed his first major role on the HBO series How to Make It in America. He played a young man trying to get ahead in the Big Apple while walking dogs. He pulled it off so naturally that it disarmed critics who expected another rapper trying to act. He wasn't after the spotlight or easy fame, because he understood that the screen demanded a different kind of respect than the stage.
During that period, he balanced world tours with appearances on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and the movie Need for Speed in 2014. On that last shoot, he had to learn to fly helicopters to play a military pilot. That's how he built a reputation as an obsessive worker who didn't ask for favors just because he was a music star. His name in the credits started to matter on its own merits.
The film industry saw him in a new light after his role in X in 2022. In this horror film directed by Ti West, he played an adult film actor in 1970s Texas. It was a risky and physical role that required absolute restraint. But the gamble paid off. The movie was a critical success, and he proved he could fit into rawer auteur cinema without breaking a sweat.
And the gamble paid off.
That same year, he produced and starred in Entergalactic for Netflix. It wasn't just any animated series. It was a visually experimental project synced with his self-titled album. Mescudi oversaw every design and every line of dialogue to make sure the aesthetic recalled oil painting. The production earned an Emmy nomination and confirmed his ability to manage large-scale technical projects.
In 2021, he took part in Don't Look Up under the direction of Adam McKay. Sharing the screen with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence didn't intimidate him. In the film, he played a famous DJ in a satire about the end of the world that gathered more than 360 million viewing hours in its first month. It was the moment major studios stopped seeing him as a guest and started considering him a solid supporting actor.
Mescudi founded his own production company, Mad Solar, in 2020 with the backing of Bron Studios. His aim wasn't to fund his own whims but to look for stories from emerging creators. In 2024, he worked with M. Night Shyamalan on Trap, playing a character who orbits around a massive concert. But his biggest personal challenge came with Teddy.
This film marked his directorial debut after years of quiet preparation. It's a story he wrote himself, which he describes as a struggle against inner demons mixed with dark humor. The shoot was carried out with a trusted crew and under the premise of making no concessions to major distributors. For him, directing is the only way to keep full control over the message.
In 2024, he also lent his voice to the series Knuckles, expanding his presence in big-budget franchises. But his real interest still lies in scripts that explore mental health and urban loneliness. He takes supporting roles if the director has a clear vision. He doesn't care how big his name is on the poster as long as the character has something to hide.
His production company, Mad Solar, signed a first-look deal in 2020 to develop original content, including TV series and narrative feature films. The budget for its first major in-house production topped ten million dollars, not counting international promotional costs.
