The casting call for Kizuna Ichigeki in 2011 wasn't looking for a mass-market star. It was looking for a reliable voice for a government-funded project for young animators in Japan. Kiyono Yasuno showed up with spartan technical training and a rare composure for a newcomer to the anime industry.
There were no fireworks in her first months on the job. But Japan's voice acting industry tends to reward stamina over instant charisma. Yasuno spent years landing supporting roles in series such as Chihayafuru and Aikatsu! while refining a register that avoided the shrill high notes common among her peers.
It was a calculated risk.
In 2015, her luck turned thanks to her role as Megumi Kato in Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend. Playing a character deliberately designed to be flat and free of distinctive traits demands complete control of breath. Yasuno built a performance based on subtlety that broke the mold of the conventional heroine. Megumi Kato generated millions of yen in merchandise and put the actress's name on the desks of Tokyo's most important production offices.
Joining the Macross franchise in 2016 meant taking on a legacy three decades in the making. As Kaname Buccaneer in Macross Delta, she led the music group Walküre and brought a vocal maturity that balanced the enthusiasm of the younger members. The role demanded live singing while performing complex choreography in front of thousands of fans at venues such as Yokohama Arena.
And the gamble paid off.
Her solo singing debut came in 2017 with the mini album Smile under the FlyingDog label. She wasn't chasing mass-market chart hits, though she came close to the top spots on the Oricon charts. Yasuno preferred an organic sound that moved away from the aggressive synthesizers common in idol pop, focusing on acoustic arrangements. She sold more than 10,000 copies in her first week of release with almost no promotion on national television.
In 2019, she voiced Elena Amamiya in Star Twinkle PreCure. It was a smart move to break into the children's market and build a multigenerational fanbase that keeps work coming for decades. But her career didn't stop at lighthearted children's animation.
In 2022, she returned to her role as Kaname in the film Macross Delta Movie: Absolute Live!!!!!! and proved her vocal range was still intact after years of grueling tours. Her breath control lets her hold long notes without unnecessary vibrato (a rarity in contemporary dubbing). She also took part in Arknights: Prelude to Dawn during 2022, playing Meteorite with a gravitas that surprised critics who had only associated her with sweet roles.
Because the secret to her longevity is managing her effort.
In 2023, she lent her voice to the role of Kanne in the series Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. It's a job where nuance matters more than how loud the scream is. She has more than 60 official credits in top-tier productions since she began working professionally at Production I.G.
The distribution deal for her latest concerts on Blu-ray reached six-figure numbers in 2024.
