Kohsuke Toriumi was born in Chigasaki in 1973. He wasn't seeking fame when he entered the training school of the Arts Vision agency. He just wanted a steady paycheck doing something other than a conventional office job. His first credited role came in 1996 with the series Ippitsu Keijou: Otoko wa Tsurai yo.
And it taught him the ropes of the trade.
In 2002, he was cast as Kiba Inuzuka in Naruto. That role provided a steady income for fifteen years. But his real recognition among genre fans came from his ability to modulate deep, slightly raspy registers. He specialized in tough characters with a touch of elegance that worked well on screen.
Before filming, he reads the script three times to find the character's silences. In 2004, he played Hayato in Gantz, and in 2005 he voiced Gennosuke in Basilisk. These roles cemented his reputation as an actor who preferred restraint to the exaggerated shouting common in the industry.
His career changed scale with the explosion of visual novels and dating games. In 2008, he took on the role of Yuri Lowell in Tales of Vesperia. He is one of the most beloved characters in the franchise, and it earned him popularity awards for a decade in Famitsu magazine polls.
Japan's voice-acting business rewards audience loyalty.
In 2010, he stepped into the role of Hajime Saitou for the Hakuouki saga. That project generated dozens of albums, films, and live events where Toriumi had to appear before thousands of people. He realized his voice worked best when he lowered the volume and whispered, because the microphone picked up the harmonics of his throat better.
But he never abandoned pure action productions. In 2012, he lent his voice to Shunsuke Imaizumi in the cycling anime Yowamushi Pedal. Toriumi recorded more than one hundred episodes while maintaining a constant tone of physical tension that drained his vocal cords in every studio session.
In 2016, he founded the project Torisetsu together with his colleague Maeno Tomoaki. They didn't just read other people's scripts from a dark lectern. They recorded variety shows and travel programs to sell content in physical format to a very specific fan base. The voice-acting industry generates profits that often outperform live-action productions in the Japanese market.
It was a purely business decision.
In 2018, he played Guido Mista in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind. He had to shout more than usual and force high notes he didn't normally hit. It was a physical change made necessary to escape the cold, handsome-lead typecasting that had followed him for years in B-movie productions.
In 2021, he joined the cast of Genshin Impact as Kaeya. Recording dialogue lines for a video game of this scale involves months of isolated work in a booth with no contact with other actors. The confidentiality agreements for these projects are stricter than those of a Hollywood blockbuster.
In 2023, he voiced the demon Gyokko in the third season of Kimetsu no Yaiba. It was a technical job of vocal distortion that hid his natural timbre under several layers of post-production. The final episode of that story arc aired in Japan on June 18, 2023.
