Showtaro Morikubo wasn't chasing fame when he entered the world of voice acting in the mid-1990s. His voice has a metallic grit that sets him apart from the clean tones typical of anime. He debuted in 1996 voicing a minor character in Bakuso Kyodai Let’s & Go!!, and from that moment on his schedule was never empty.
And the gamble paid off.
Before turning thirty, he was already a key figure in productions at Pierrot and Toei Animation. But his approach to the work was always different from his colleagues'. He didn't just read the script; he looked for nuances of weariness or cynicism that weren't written on the page.
In 2002, he landed the role of Shikamaru Nara in Naruto. That lazy ninja who would rather watch the clouds than fight was a perfect match for his listless yet intelligent delivery. Japanese audiences connected with that calculated apathy because it felt human amid all the battle cries.
The industry did not see that change coming.
Morikubo doesn't just read scripts in a soundproof booth. His official career as a singer began in 2001 with the single The Answer. But his relationship with music is more technical than it seems, since he often gets involved in composing and arranging his songs.
His voice works like a heavily distorted string instrument. In 2004, he brought X to life in the Mega Man X series, and in 2013 he played Yusuke Makishima in Yowamushi Pedal. These characters require a specific breathing cadence to convey exhaustion or technical superiority.
Because voice acting in Japan is a saturated market where only those with a personal signature survive. Morikubo has always avoided generic hero roles. He prefers supporting roles with rough edges or villains with twisted inner logic.
It was a purely technical decision.
In 2018, he decided to leave his longtime agency to work as a freelancer. It was a risky move in a system that punishes independence. But his reputation was strong enough that casting directors kept calling him directly, without intermediaries.
In 2022, he took part in the production of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, bringing back characters who had been forgotten for years. During 2023, he voiced Hermes in the second season of Record of Ragnarok. He still gets paid per session according to the pay scales set by the voice actors' union.
In 2024, he founded his own company, Add9th, to manage his image rights and his music tours. The company's share capital remains under strict professional confidentiality.
In 2024, management of his schedule came under the sole control of this office, after decades tied to outside agencies.
