The Trail of a Distance Runner

Lance Gross was running the 400-meter hurdles at Howard University before acting got in the way. It wasn't a plan laid out from childhood. Her education at one of the most important academic institutions in African American culture in the United States gave her the tools to understand that her looks were not her only asset.

Luck found him in an acting class.

Tyler Perry walked into that classroom and saw something no one else had noticed yet. In 2006, he offered him the role of Calvin Payne in the sitcom House of Payne. It was a long-term contract that kept him busy for eight seasons and more than 250 episodes. That gave him unusual financial security for an actor who had just started out in the Atlanta industry.

But typecasting is a real risk when you work for the same studio for so long. Gross won four NAACP Image Awards for this work. Although audiences associated him with family comedy, he wanted to prove his range could include darker or more physical nuances.

From the living room to independent film

In 2010 he starred in Our Family Wedding alongside America Ferrera and Forest Whitaker. The film performed well at the box office but didn't give him the decisive push toward big studio productions. So he decided to look for projects with a different emotional weight.

The Last Fall in 2012 is probably his most honest work. He plays an NFL player who retires early and has to cope with the emptiness of his life. It's a small, raw film. They shot the movie in just 15 days on a minimal budget.

Independent film taught him how to handle silence.

Then came roles in action series such as Crisis in 2014 and Sleepy Hollow in 2015. At this stage his physical presence became rougher. But he never abandoned the image of an upright man he projected early on. That mix of toughness and vulnerability helped him survive the cancellation of several television projects.

Cameras, lenses and the streets of Chicago

Off camera, Gross devotes much of his time to professional photography. It's not just a celebrity hobby (he has shot high-level portraits for fashion magazines). He often brings his personal camera to sets to capture what happens behind the scenes while he waits for his turn in front of the camera.

In 2022 he joined the cast of The Chi to play Victor St. Cyr. The role demanded a restraint he hadn't always been able to explore on mainstream television. The Showtime series let him connect with a more urban and complex narrative, far from his early commercial hits.

The actor lives in Los Angeles with his family.

In 2024, he appeared in Dutch II: Angel's Revenge, returning to a role in a criminal action saga. He keeps taking on roles where physicality is the priority, while his photography studio stays active on the side. Filming for this sequel took place mainly in Newark locations and had a budget of $5 million.
