Laura Sohn was born in 1993 and grew up in San Francisco with her sights set on a kind of acting that demands more sweat than makeup. Her training was not the result of a lucky break at a shopping mall but of years of academic study at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. There she learned that control of the body and voice is an actor's only real tool once the spotlights go off.
In 2016 she appeared in the short film The Vampire Leland, playing Fang. It was her first real contact with a professional camera after spending much of her adolescence on the stages of university theaters. That small production helped her understand that film pacing calls for a restraint the stage sometimes ignores.
It was an education built on mud and a small budget.
But the move to mainstream television came quickly, through episodic roles that paid the bills and built up hours in front of the camera. In 2018 she appeared in an episode of NCIS: New Orleans, and a year later she did the same on Instinct and God Friended Me. The parts were small, almost functional, but Sohn used them to study how the inner workings of major American networks operated.
The opportunity that changed her career came in 2019 when she joined the seventh season of The Blacklist. She was cast as Alina Park, an FBI agent with a murky past and a dangerous tendency toward explosive violence. What seemed at first like a supporting character to fill the gap left by other actors ended up convincing the producers at NBC.
And the gamble paid off.
On October 7, 2020, it was officially announced that Sohn would become a main cast member of the series for its eighth season. Audiences embraced Park because she didn't try to be likable or seek the viewer's approval. The actress gave the character a physical rigidity that contrasted with the theatricality of James Spader, and that mix of energies kept the procedural storylines afloat for several years.
Because shooting a series of twenty-two episodes per season is a test of physical endurance. Sohn spent fourteen-hour days on sets in New York choreographing fight scenes and memorizing technical police procedural dialogue. During that period she had little time for other projects, but she managed to get her name into the opening credits of one of the most-watched shows on broadcast television.
Sohn decided that three seasons were enough.
In 2021 she decided to explore independent film with The Last Thing Mary Saw, a period horror film directed by Edoardo Vitaletti. In this project she played the maid of a Calvinist family in New York in 1843. It was a complete change of register, where silence and religious oppression replaced the chases and gunfights of her daily work on television.
Her exit from The Blacklist came in 2022, just as the show's ninth season wrapped. The actress announced her decision to leave the project in pursuit of new creative challenges and to step away from the long-running format that consumes the schedule of any actor in Hollywood. There were no dramatic farewells or lengthy statements on social media.
The actress has always kept a low profile off camera and prefers that her work speak for her in the industry's databases. She doesn't frequent red carpet events unless strictly required by her contract. Her departure from the series took effect after episode 22 of the ninth season, titled Marvin Gerard: Conclusion Part 2.
