Lori Petty wasn't looking for fame when she worked as a graphic designer in Omaha. A twist of fate brought her to New York in the late eighties. In 1991, she taught Keanu Reeves how to surf on the set of Point Break, while the world discovered a restless energy that didn't fit the molds of the era.
She was never the hero's girl.
In 1992, she shot A League of Their Own, and the film grossed 132 million dollars worldwide. Petty played Kit Keller with a mix of envy and courage that managed to outshine established stars in every frame. Yet the Los Angeles industry has a short memory for women who refuse to be passive supporting players.
And that's how her name started to become a problem in the offices of the major studios. Because Petty wouldn't accept the flat scripts she was offered after her first major box office hit. So she decided to bet on projects that most of her agents considered career suicide.
In 1995, Tank Girl hit theaters. It was a financial flop of biblical proportions that nearly ended her career prematurely. The film cost 25 million dollars and barely recouped 4 at the U.S. box office. But that head-on clash with market logic made her an aesthetic icon for punk culture in the decades that followed.
Hollywood came calling right away.
In the years that followed, Petty turned to independent films and voice work on animated series. In 1997, she voiced Livewire in Superman: The Animated Series and proved her charisma went far beyond the physical screen. Still, the system kept labeling her a difficult actress because of her androgynous look and her refusal to conform to traditional notions of femininity.
In 2008, she decided to step behind the camera to tell her own story. She wrote and directed The Poker House, based on her traumatic childhood marked by abuse in Iowa. It was the first leading role for Jennifer Lawrence, whom Petty discovered long before the industry even knew his name.
Television was where she found the oxygen that movies denied her. In 2014, she joined the cast of Orange Is the New Black to play Lolly Whitehill. What started as a brief cameo ended up stretching until 2019, thanks to the intensity she brought to a storyline about mental health in prisons.
Her screen presence has lost none of its edge.
In 2021, she appeared in the miniseries Station Eleven, playing the conductor of an orchestra in a post-apocalyptic world. Petty shot her scenes in the icy locations of Ontario and brought a dry maturity to a character who survives through art. Her career has always revolved around that idea of resilience in the face of a collapsing world.
Petty lives in Venice Beach and devotes much of her time to abstract painting and digital design. In 2023, she voiced the series Summer Camp Island for Cartoon Network. The production contract prohibited changes to the dialogue without direct supervision from the showrunner.
