Madolyn Smith Osborne never needed to beg for screen attention. In 1980, she made her debut in Urban Cowboy and made audiences forget John Travolta for a moment. She played Pam with an aristocratic distance that clashed head-on with the sweat and sawdust of Texas bars.
And that became her trademark throughout the decade.
Her presence in 1980s film reflected a very specific type of intelligent and somewhat aloof woman. In 1984, she starred in All of Me alongside Steve Martin. It was no easy task to steal a scene from Martin at the peak of his physical prime, but Smith did it with dry elegance and without resorting to cheap grimaces.
Because she understood that comedy works best when someone keeps their composure while everything falls apart around them.
Television gave her the space that film rationed. In 1986, she starred in If Tomorrow Comes, and the series became an immediate mass hit. That tale of revenge and sophisticated scams suited her sharp gaze perfectly. Nearly 20 million viewers followed its twists during its original run on CBS.
Despite her fame, she never seemed comfortable with the public scrutiny of Los Angeles. But she kept working on high-profile projects such as 2010 and the miniseries The Kennedys of Massachusetts in 1990. There, she played Rose Kennedy and proved she could carry a complex character without losing an ounce of authority on set.
The industry expected her to make the definitive leap into producing.
But she had other plans away from the spotlight. After marrying sports star Mark Osborne, she drastically cut back on her appearances. She preferred family stability in Canada to the 16-hour shoot days in California that wore down her patience.
Many actors say they leave and return two years later due to lack of funds. Madolyn Smith Osborne kept her word with almost military discipline. In 1994, she appeared in an episode of the series Due South, which marked her farewell to professional acting.
She chose anonymity when she was still a safe bet for casting directors.
Her exit from the industry was neither traumatic nor surrounded by tabloid scandals. She simply stopped accepting scripts because professional ambition no longer drove her. So she stepped away from film sets to focus on raising her two daughters and on her private life on the outskirts of Toronto. In 1994 she closed her chapter in front of the cameras at just thirty-nine years old.
