Nine years after the USS Discovery was lost in space, a joint expedition from the United States and the Soviet Union is sent to Jupiter to reactivate the HAL 9000 computer, which controlled the crippled ship, and to uncover the problem that doomed the Discovery mission, as well as the meaning of the final transmissions from one of the crew members. Dr. Floyd, the head of the expedition, arrives at Jupiter and comes face to face with the giant black monolith that the first mission was meant to investigate.
