The Weight of a Teenage Voice

Manaka Iwami wasn't chasing mass stardom when she auditioned for Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms in 2018. She was 19 years old and had technical training that was still being polished at the Pro-Fit academy. Mari Okada, the film's director, was looking for a fragility that didn't sound forced. And she found it in a voice that seemed to crack on every syllable without losing its dramatic power.

That role as Maquia earned her the Best Actress Newcomer award at the Seiyu Awards in 2019. But the recognition wasn't a twist of fate. Iwami decided to pursue voice acting after being deeply moved by the series AnoHana during her high school years. She wanted to make others feel what she felt in front of the TV at her home in Saitama Prefecture.

It was a risky bet.

In 2019 she took on the responsibility of inheriting a character with a heavy emotional weight in Japanese entertainment. We're talking about Tohru Honda in the remake of Fruits Basket. The pressure was doubled because she had to step out of the shadow of the 2001 version and win over an extremely demanding fan base. Iwami opted for a more naturalistic and less caricatured reading of the character across the three seasons the project ran until 2021.

Maturity Behind the Mic

Many industry professionals feared her sweet register would typecast her into roles as a helpless heroine. But she broke that pattern with work where the character's psychology demanded darker nuance. In 2021 she played Rice Shower in Uma Musume: Pretty Derby and brought a melancholic depth that surprised the studio's sound directors. Iwami understands that the silence between lines is just as important as the dialogue itself.

Then came the change of agency.

In April 2022 she closed her chapter at Pro-Fit and joined Raccoon Dog, the agency founded by veteran Nobuhiko Okamoto. This strategic move aimed for greater freedom in choosing projects in an industry saturated with new talent. In 2023 her performance as Akane Kurokawa in Oshi no Ko marked a definitive turning point in her career.

The suicide attempt scene and the subsequent nervous breakdown of Akane in episode six of the series were discussed on specialist forums for their raw intensity. Iwami recorded those takes with an intensity that bordered on physical exhaustion. The result was unanimous acclaim from international critics, who placed her among the most accomplished voices of her generation.

In 2024 she returned to her role in the second season of the same series, maintaining a frantic work pace. She balanced this success with her role in Otonari no Tenshi-sama, bringing Mahiru Shiina to life. Iwami uses a specific breathing technique for each character, which allows her to alter her timbre without electronic filters in post-production.

Japan's anime industry generates more than 20,000 million dollars a year, and voice casting is the central pillar of that machine. Iwami is paid per recording session according to the standardized pay scales of the actors' union, regardless of how many minutes of dialogue end up on screen. In 2025, her schedule includes four animated feature films and the sequels to three high-budget video game franchises.
