Marianne Faithfull walked into Andrew Loog Oldham's office at seventeen with a voice that had not yet broken. She never set out to be the public face of a generation, but the success of As Tears Go By in 1964 thrust her straight into the center of the media storm. The convent-school girl became the target of the British press while she tried to figure out whether her future lay in music or acting.

Her film debut came with I’ll Never Forget What’s’isname in 1967. She was the first person to say the infamous four-letter word in a British commercial production. Shortly after, she filmed The Girl on a Motorcycle wearing a black leather jumpsuit that fueled fantasies for decades. But her relationship with Mick Jagger and her heroin addiction derailed her career before the end of the 1960s.

She lived on the streets of Soho for two years.

The Roar of Broken Lungs

In 1979 she released Broken English and the world discovered a new voice. It was no longer the sweet soprano of her early days but an instrument roughened by cigarettes and excess. The album sold more than a million copies and restored the credibility the industry had systematically denied her.

During the 1980s and 1990s, she worked with directors such as Jean-Luc Godard and Derek Jarman. She appeared in The City of Lost Children in 1995, bringing a physical presence that no longer relied on the conventional beauty of her youth. Her ability to inhabit broken characters became her greatest asset on European film sets.

And the gamble paid off.

Sofia Coppola cast her in 2006 to play Empress Maria Theresa in Marie Antoinette. Faithfull brought a natural gravitas that contrasted with the film's aesthetic. A year later she starred in Irina Palm, playing a woman who works in a strip club to pay for her grandson's treatment. The film grossed 10 million dollars on the international market and earned her a nomination at the European Film Awards.

Resistance in the Studio

In 2011 she appeared in Faces in the Crowd and continued collaborating with musicians such as Nick Cave and Roger Waters. Her voice grew so deep that it was sometimes hard to tell whether she was singing or reciting a living will. For her, art was never a matter of technique but of pure physical survival.

In 2021 she released the album She Walks in Beauty, recorded during her recovery from a severe COVID-19 infection. Doctors confirmed the illness left her with permanent lung damage that prevents her from performing live again. Her fortune is estimated at less than one million pounds after decades of copyright disputes and medical expenses stemming from her chronic health problems.

She lives in London under constant medical supervision.
