The one-way ticket she never used

Marina Sirtis arrived in Los Angeles in 1986 with little money and a work permit that would expire within months. Her parents, of Greek origin, preferred any other career for their daughter, but she had already studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. The plan was simple. If she didn't land a meaningful job before her visa expired, she would return to England to make a living in British theater.

She landed the role of Deanna Troi on the same day she was supposed to leave the country.

That casting call for Star Trek: The Next Generation changed her destiny by accident. Sirtis knew nothing about the universe created by Gene Roddenberry, and years later she even confessed she could barely tell the characters of the original series apart. In early drafts her character was going to be the head of security, but a last-minute swap with actress Denise Crosby placed her in the seat of the empathic counselor.

The production nearly fired her during the first season because they couldn't find the right tone for her scenes. The writers struggled to fit a psychologist onto a bridge full of military officers and scientists. As a result, the actress spent much of the early episodes sidelined to an aesthetic role, in outfits she herself considered ridiculous.

And the bet paid off in the long run.

The Uniform and Professional Maturity

In 1992, a fundamental change took place in her career within the franchise. Producer Jeri Taylor decided that the character of Troi should start wearing the standard Starfleet uniform instead of civilian outfits. This technical detail allowed Sirtis to explore a much more authoritative and professional side of the counselor. But success in television didn't stop her from seeking other kinds of roles beyond alien makeup.

While filming all seven seasons of the series, she also took on voice-over work that has become cult favorites. In 1994, she voiced Demona in the animated series Gargoyles. The role let her step away from the warmth of the Enterprise to play a complex, rage-filled villain. She kept up that vocal range for 52 episodes, earning immense respect in the American voice-acting industry.

Her move to film was a natural step after the series ended in 1994. She appeared in all four films of the saga shot between that year and 2002. Although reviews were mixed for movies like Star Trek: Nemesis, she maintained a steady presence on the convention circuit and in small roles on shows like Stargate SG-1 and NCIS.

She never stopped working in theater.

Returning to Her London Roots

Sirtis's personal life took a turn in 2019 after the death of her husband, musician Michael Lamper. They had been married since 1992, and his loss pushed her to make a drastic decision about where she lived. In 2021, she decided to sell her home in the United States to move back to London for good after more than three decades living in California. She wanted to be close to her family and reconnect with the West End stage.

In 2020, she returned to play Deanna Troi in the series Star Trek: Picard. It was not a hollow nostalgic return, since the scripts explored the grief and maturity of her character in a much darker stage. She shot her scenes in a tightly controlled production environment, far from the grueling sixteen-hour days of the 1980s.

Outside of spaceships, she has taken part in independent films made on very tight budgets. In 2023, she joined the cast of A Thousand Little Cuts, playing a psychiatrist in a psychological thriller. It is a role that closes a strange circle with her television past, but from a much rawer and more realistic angle.

Marina Sirtis bills her fees through her own representation company in the United Kingdom. In 2024, her schedule is split between audio recordings for video games and occasional appearances in low-budget British productions. Her home in north London is now her permanent base of operations.
