Masanobu Ando wasn't looking for the spotlight when Takeshi Kitano cast him to star in Kids Return in 1996. He was 21 years old and had no previous experience in front of the camera. But that distant, somewhat defiant gaze convinced the director there was material for more than a passing teen idol.
That year, he won nearly every Best New Actor award in Japan.
The industry quickly tried to typecast him as a brooding leading man. But Ando decided the easy path wasn't for him. In 2000, he accepted the role of Kazuo Kiriyama in Battle Royale. It was a completely silent character who spent the film massacring his classmates with a machine gun and an icy smile.
Director Kinji Fukasaku asked him not to blink during the executions. Ando became a chilling physical presence who stole the spotlight from the film's heroes without speaking a single line of dialogue. That performance earned him an international cult following that he still holds today.
Ando is an unusual figure by Japanese industry standards. He disappears. During several periods of his career, he chose not to take on work because the scripts didn't convince him. He doesn't mind spending years off the radar if the project lacks soul.
In 2006, he worked under Shinya Tsukamoto in Nightmare Detective. It was a logical collaboration. Tsukamoto's visceral cinema matched the dry intensity Ando projects on screen. Yet after that, he spaced out his appearances in an almost obsessive way.
He is an actor of minimal gestures.
He prefers to work with directors who understand the value of emptiness. In 2011, he took part in the ambitious Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale, a Taiwanese production that demanded brutal physical effort in the middle of the jungle. Filming dragged on for ten months under extreme weather conditions that tested his endurance.
With the rise of global streaming platforms, his work pace has stabilized. In 2021, he played Takasugi Shinsaku in Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning. He recovered the lethal elegance that made him famous two decades earlier, but with far more mature restraint.
In 2023, he joined the cast of the Netflix series The Days. The production recreates the disaster at the Fukushima nuclear plant. He plays one of the engineers who stayed inside the plant to try to halt the catastrophe. It is a technical, cold role charged with political tension.
He remains an enigma to the press in his country.
In 2024, he took on the role of Hideyuki Makimura in the live-action adaptation of City Hunter. The project required specific handgun training and precise coordination with the stunt team on the streets of Shinjuku. The film was shot with Sony Venice 2 cameras to capture the nighttime texture of Tokyo at an ISO sensitivity of 3200.
