Manami Higa never planned to move to Tokyo in pursuit of the spotlight. In 2002, she lived in Okinawa, and her only connection to show business was local modeling. Her height drew her to the runway before the scripts, since she stood out physically from the average of her island home.
In 2005, she made her film debut in Nirai Kanai yori no tegami. It was a small role, but enough for casting directors to notice her direct gaze and an expressive restraint that is rare in newcomers.
It was the first warning of what was to come.
In 2006, she auditioned in a mass casting call for the public broadcaster NHK. She beat more than two thousand hopefuls to star in the morning drama Natsudora. Filming in 2007 forced her to leave her home and settle permanently in the Japanese capital.
In 2008, she joined the cast of Code Blue. Her portrayal of nurse Mihoko Saeki lasted a decade across several seasons. That role defined her public image for millions of viewers. The franchise's film grossed 9300 million yen in 2018.
But typecasting soon became a real problem. For years, producers only offered her roles in medical dramas like Doctors: Saigo no Isha in 2011. She accepted the jobs but looked for projects with different costumes and a less rigid tone.
And the bet only paid off partially.
In 2015, she tried her luck with historical comedy in Samurai Sensei. That experience let her break away from the sober image of hospital dramas, but it didn't stop the industry from casting her in authority or caregiver roles.
In 2021, she received an urgent professional call. She had to replace actress Kyoko Fukada in the series Oshi no Oujisama with barely a week to prepare, due to health reasons affecting the original lead. Higa got the shoot done without altering the schedule of the Fuji TV network.
But her effort could not save the ratings.
The series ended with an average audience share of 4.9 percent. It was one of the most tense moments of her career, given the media pressure surrounding her replacement and the cold reality of the final ratings.
In 2023, she appeared in Kyojo 0 alongside Takuya Kimura. She was no longer chasing absolute leading roles but supporting characters with a drier dramatic edge. In 2024, she headed the cast of the series Is There a Vet in the House? under the direction of Naoto Kumazawa.
Because her strategy now is to alternate commercial television with lower-budget projects. In 2024, she also shot Sora no Hana, an independent production that stepped away from the big spotlight of the national networks.
For 2025, she has the feature film Bakuen scheduled for release. Principal photography wrapped in March after shooting on location in Kanagawa Prefecture. The film's final budget came to ¥200 million.
