Matt Salinger stands just under six foot two. In 1990 he squeezed into a blue spandex suit to play Steve Rogers in a version of Captain America that never even got a US theatrical release. It was a six-million-dollar disaster that went straight to video store shelves.
But that didn't derail his career.
Before that stumble, he had already appeared in The Catcher Was a Spy in 1984. There, he played Danny Burke, a role that gave him visibility in an industry that always looked at him under a magnifying glass because of his last name. Being the son of J.D. Salinger means carrying a weight few actors can bear without breaking. But he preferred steady, supporting work over the explosive fame that consumed his father.
In 1989, he appeared in Options, and a year later he tested the waters on stage with Lunch Nude. New York critics were tough on his first steps on the boards. So he decided his path didn't depend solely on Broadway applause.
Producing became his natural refuge when leading roles stopped coming in. In 1994, he founded Map Point Pictures to have full control over the scripts that landed on his desk. He produced titles such as Fortress or Wilder Napalm, seeking stories that moved away from the most obvious commercial circuits of Los Angeles.
The industry is a cold place.
In 1998 he appeared in What Dreams May Come alongside Robin Williams. It was one of the few times he took part in a big-budget project that decade. The shoot was complex, and the visual effects took up most of the production time. But Salinger used those months to observe how an eighty-million-dollar set was run.
After the shoot, he decided to focus on smaller projects. In 2000, he produced Plan B, and in 2002 he took charge of A Hole in the One. His interests shifted toward independent film, where his family name carried less weight than at the major studios in California.
The death of J. D. Salinger in 2010 permanently changed his priorities. Matt took over management of the most secretive literary legacy in American history. In 2019 he confirmed that he was organizing all of his father's unpublished material for future publication. It is painstaking archival work that occupies most of his day among folders and original manuscripts.
There was no turning back.
He didn't abandon acting entirely, though. In 2022 he appeared in the series The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, playing a lawyer. It was a brief but dry role, shot in just a few weeks. Salinger now prefers surgical television appearances to the long film shoots that keep him away from his office in Vermont.
In 2024, he wrapped his role in the independent film Ice Grill on the Milton. The shoot was done with a small crew and a budget that didn't reach two million dollars.
