May Calamawy was born in Bahrain in 1986. She spent her childhood among the dunes of Doha and the asphalt of Dubai, shaped by an Egyptian father and a Palestinian mother. She studied industrial design as her family wished, but her creative drive pushed her toward Boston when she turned seventeen.
At Emerson College, she realized her place was in front of the camera. She completed her training at the William Esper Studio in New York, where she began to grapple with the reality of an industry that only offered her stereotyped roles. For years, she jumped between short films and brief TV appearances.
And rejection became a productive routine.
During this early stage, she appeared in Djinn in 2013. It was the first horror film shot in the United Arab Emirates, directed by Tobe Hooper. The project didn't receive much critical attention, but it helped Calamawy understand how large-scale productions work before making her decisive push into the American market.
In 2019 she landed the role of Dena Hassan in the series Ramy. Her portrayal of the lead character's sister moved away from the usual clichés about Arab women in American television. Calamawy drew on her own experience with alopecia areata to build a storyline in season two that stripped away any trace of artifice from her performance.
International critics highlighted her ability to carry drama without raising her voice. But her big leap in scale came through a social media audition.
It was an unexpected move.
Mohamed Diab recruited her for the Marvel universe in 2022. In the series Moon Knight she played Layla El-Faouly and ended up taking on the identity of Scarlet Scarab. That role demanded months of intense physical training and technical coordination with stunt specialists, something Calamawy had never experienced in her previous projects.
The global visibility of the superhero franchise opened the doors of major studios for her. In 2024 she joined the cast of Gladiator II under the direction of Ridley Scott. Filming in Morocco and Malta meant a physical return to her geographic roots, but within a production machine with budgets well above 250 million dollars.
Her name began to surface for projects that required a specific kind of restrained performance. In 2025, she starred in the independent thriller The 40-Year-Old Version, showing that her interest in auteur cinema remained intact despite offers from major franchises.
But success did not change her approach to her work.
Calamawy maintains a steady residence in New York and chooses her scripts with the aim of avoiding ethnic caricature. In 2024 she signed a contract to star in a stage adaptation in London that explored family tensions in contemporary Egypt. Filming her scenes for the gladiator sequel took exactly forty-two days on location in Ouarzazate.
