Melanie Griffith was fourteen years old when she met Don Johnson on the set of The Harrad Experiment. The year was 1972. Her mother, Tippi Hedren, allowed the twenty-two-year-old actor to live with her daughter in a relationship that would scandalize any social convention today.
That early start defined her entry into an industry that both devoured and elevated her in equal measure. Griffith didn't seek fame because she had been living in it since she was born in New York. But her real education came on the set of Roar, where a lion mauled her face and she needed fifty stitches.
Film was never a friendly refuge for her.
In 1975 she shot Night Moves under the direction of Arthur Penn. It was her first major role, and it showed that her whispery voice hid a physical presence capable of commanding the screen. New York critics began to take notice of this young actress who always seemed on the verge of breaking but never quite did.
In 1986 she played Audrey in Something Wild. Jonathan Demme saw the mix of vulnerability and danger the actress had carried since childhood among real wild animals. The audience responded with a fascination that put her at the top of the casting lists for major studios.
Her mass recognition came in 1988 with Working Girl. Mike Nichols gave her the role of Tess McGill, and she turned it into a reflection of the female ambition of the decade. The film worked because Griffith brought a truthfulness that other actresses of her generation couldn't convey.
She earned an Oscar nomination and won the Golden Globe. She was paid two million dollars for her next project, a figure that at the time put her at the top of Hollywood's salary ranks alongside the biggest male stars.
It was her last major commercial bet before she fell into a spiral of failed projects.
Filming Two Much in 1995 permanently changed the course of her personal life. She met Antonio Banderas, and the romance buried her professional profile under tons of gossip magazine coverage. The Spanish press embraced her as one of their own, but Hollywood directors began to see her more as a red carpet celebrity.
They got married in London in 1996. Griffith then piled up minor titles such as Crazy in Alabama, directed by her husband in 1999, which failed to win over box office audiences. The industry began to close its doors on her while she battled addiction in luxury rehab centers.
But the industry doesn't forgive the passage of time or public scandals.
She tried to regain her creative spark in 2003 with her Broadway debut. She played Roxie Hart in the musical Chicago, and critics of the time praised her dancing. It was a bright interlude in a decade dominated by supporting roles on television and in independent films.
After her divorce in 2014, the actress decided to focus on projects where her name wasn't the only draw. In 2017 she appeared in The Disaster Artist under the direction of James Franco. It was a brief appearance, but it carried the confidence of someone who no longer has anything to prove to critics.
Her screen presence became highly selective over the years. In 2020 she played Tess in the film Personal Assistant. In this production she shared billing with her daughter Dakota Johnson, and the film gave audiences a chance to see two generations of the Griffith family under the same technical spotlight.
Plastic surgery and health problems also made headlines during this period. Griffith spoke openly about her failed procedures in several interviews published between 2017 and 2019, admitting that her fear of aging led her to make poor decisions in the operating room.
In 2023 the actress took on voice-over work and small projects on streaming platforms. The production of The High Note in 2020 had a budget of $25 million and earned only two million in theaters due to the global cinema shutdown.
