Meredith Baxter didn't ask permission to enter living rooms across half the world during the 1980s. Her arrival on Family Ties in 1982 happened almost by accident, after years of supporting roles in productions no one remembers. As the architect and liberal mother, she became a mirror for a middle-class America seeking stability during the Reagan era.
And she made it happen.
Before reaching that status as the nation's mother, she worked on Bridget Loves Bernie for 1972. There she met David Birney, her second husband, with whom she formed a couple the press of the day sold as the perfect marriage. But behind the cameras the reality was different, and Baxter struggled with insecurity that nearly ended her career before she turned thirty.
The industry quickly typecast her as the angelic blonde. In 1976 she appeared in All the President's Men, in a brief but essential role that helped show the domestic world of the informants in the Watergate case. It was one of the few times big-budget cinema knocked on her door with a weighty script in hand.
The end of Family Ties in 1989 posed a real risk of being forgotten in the attic of old television glories. Baxter then decided that her image as a sweet woman had to die on screen. In 1992 she starred in A Woman Scorned: The Betty Broderick Story, playing a real-life woman who killed her ex-husband and his new wife.
It was a survival decision.
That role earned her an Emmy nomination and proved she could carry high-intensity psychological dramas. TV networks started to see her as a safe bet for the made-for-TV movies that dominated daytime programming in the 1990s. During that decade, she appeared in more than fifteen productions of this kind and earned six-figure paychecks for each three-week shoot.
In 1994, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, which kept her out of the spotlight for a brief period. She beat the disease and returned to work with a different mindset about fame and public exposure. So she began choosing projects that would let her spend more time with her five children, away from the major studios in Los Angeles.
In 2009, interest in her private life spiked again after she publicly came out as a lesbian. She did not do so because of media pressure, but because she needed to live honestly after three failed marriages. She published her memoir in 2011 under the title Untied, and the book quickly climbed to the top of the nonfiction bestseller lists.
Because honesty usually sells better than mystery.
Her career didn't slow down with the new millennium. In 2014 she appeared in the series Finding Carter and lent her voice to various animated projects in later years. During 2023 she shot the film The Secret Help under the direction of Cine J. Williams on locations in Atlanta. The contract for that production specified that work days could not exceed ten hours per day for union health reasons.
