Lee Min-jung was in no rush to step onto a television set. She started out on the theater stage while studying at Sungkyunkwan University, and that classical training shaped the way she understands a script. Many Korean actors debut as teenagers, but she preferred to wait until she had something to say.
Time proved him right.
In 2009, she played Ha Jae-kyung in Boys Over Flowers. It was a supporting role, but her energy outshone several leads at key moments. That short haircut and her direct attitude broke the mold of the long-suffering heroine who dominated the fiction of the era.
And the gamble paid off.
Her move into film came with Cyrano Agency in 2010. The movie raked in millions and earned her the Best New Actress award at the Grand Bell Awards. She achieved this without relying on the usual tricks of the tearjerker melodrama that tends to flood Seoul's theaters.
She married Lee Byung-hun in 2013. The wedding stunned the press in South Korea and created media pressure that kept her away from major projects for long stretches. So she took refuge in smaller productions where creative control was a real priority.
But the industry is fickle with actresses who are over thirty. The scripts she received often repeated the same archetype of the devoted wife or the mother in conflict. She turned down most of those offers, however, to wait for a role with more than three dimensions.
Television was her salvation.
In 2020, she returned with the family drama Once Again. The series reached viewership ratings above 30 percent and put her name back on the lists of television's highest-paid contracts. It was a hundred-episode job that demanded exhausting physical discipline in front of the cameras.
Her appearance on the show Gamsung Camping in 2020 revealed a much more pragmatic and less polished side of her personality. Audiences sometimes forget that behind the cosmetics campaigns is a professional who negotiates her own filming contracts with an iron fist.
In 2023, she starred in the movie Switch opposite Kwon Sang-woo. The story explores swapping lives and gave her the chance to play with a comedic style that few directors had offered her until then. After all, Min Jung has always preferred dry humor to dramatic overacting.
Filming for her next project for 2025 has a budget of 15,000 million won for the main production phase alone.
