Nastassja Kinski was born in West Berlin in 1961. Her father was Klaus Kinski. That legacy of talent and fury shaped her first steps in an industry that didn't quite know where to place her. She was only twelve years old when actress Lisa Kreuzer discovered her in a Munich discotheque and convinced her to make her debut in Falso movimiento.
She was pure instinct.
In 1976 she met Roman Polanski. The director became fixated on her gaze and sent her to study acting with Lee Strasberg in New York. It was a risky decision, since the young woman barely spoke English at the time. But the gamble paid off. In 1979 she starred in Tess, and the world discovered that her beauty was more than mere decoration. She won the Golden Globe for Best New Star - Actress and became part of the collective imagination of the era.
Then came the shoot for Hunger in 1982. Francis Ford Coppola trusted her with this experimental project, but the film was an absolute financial disaster for the studio. That box-office flop slowed her rise through the Hollywood big-production system.
The industry doesn't forgive silence.
Wim Wenders delivered her most memorable role in 1984 with Paris, Texas. Her performance as Jane is a lesson in restrained drama in front of a mirror. And she pulled it off almost always sitting in a peep-show booth. That film won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and forever fixed her image with a pink angora sweater that design schools still study today.
But Nastassja never wanted to be a conventional star. She turned down the lead role in Raiders of the Lost Ark because she preferred working on smaller European projects. That independence came at a high price in terms of global fame. She preferred to shoot with Paul Schrader in Cat People rather than sign long-term contracts with the big Californian studios.
In 1993 she reunited with Wenders on Far Away, So Close!. The result was rather uneven. Critics began treating her as a relic of the past, even though she was barely past thirty at the time.
Starting in the 1990s, her presence in major productions gradually faded. She appeared in The Mighty Pardon in 2000 under the direction of Michael Winterbottom. It was one of her last roles with real dramatic weight in mainstream film before she voluntarily stepped into the background.
The industry wrote her off far too soon.
In 2006, David Lynch cast her in a cameo in Inland Empire. It was a brief appearance that served as a nod to her status as a European cult cinema icon. Since then, she has focused on serving as a jury member at international festivals and on humanitarian causes. Her interest in the spotlight faded long before her talent did.
In 2016 she agreed to compete on the German version of the TV show Let's Dance. She was eliminated in the seventh live show of the competition and finished in eighth place in the overall standings.
