Natasha Calis was twelve years old when she learned to dislocate her jaw in front of a mirror in Vancouver. She wasn't looking for a magic trick but a way to survive the demands of director Ole Bornedal on the set of The Possession in 2012. That girl was no ordinary debutante. She had been working since the age of seven in Canadian television productions and commercials that paid the bills without bringing much glory.
Em Brenek's role demanded intense physicality. Calis spent weeks studying erratic movements to play a teenager possessed by a dybbuk. Filming overlapped with her work on The Firm in 2012. That year she worked more hours than many veteran actors in the British Columbia industry.
And the gamble paid off.
Because the horror industry often devours its child stars, Calis used the noise of special effects to show she knew how to listen on the other side of the camera. In 2013, she starred in The Harvest alongside Michael Shannon and Samantha Morton. She played Maryann, a young woman who uncovers a dark secret in her neighbors' house. Critics praised her ability to hold her own against Shannon without blinking.
After the impact of the wooden box, many casting directors saw her only as the girl from horror films. But Calis chose to move away from cheap scares in search of characters with more shades of gray. In 2015, she joined the cast of Ties That Bind. The series lasted only one season, but it gave her a feel for the rhythm of long-running commercial television.
Her turn toward mature acting came with a stethoscope. In 2020, she took on the role of Ashley Collins in the medical drama Nurses. The show was filmed entirely in Toronto and revealed a much more restrained side of her range. She carried the weight of the storyline across twenty episodes before the series ended its run in 2021.
The change of pace was total.
In 2022, she landed the lead role in SkyMed as Hayley Roberts. The Paramount+ series follows air medical evacuation teams in northern Canada. The shoot was physically demanding and harsh. During filming of the second season in 2023, temperatures dropped below negative twenty degrees Celsius on the Manitoba and Ontario locations.
Calis plays a nurse who must make life-or-death decisions mid-flight. The series was renewed for a third season in 2024, confirming that her name is now a safe bet for international co-productions. She prefers to keep her home base in Vancouver, away from the noise of Los Angeles.
The contract for the new episodes of SkyMed was signed under strict confidentiality clauses regarding the fate of her character. Calis continues to manage her projects through the Red Management agency. The budget per episode of her latest production exceeds two million Canadian dollars.
