Ned Beatty made his film debut at age 35 with a scene that still turns stomachs. It was in 1972, under John Boorman's direction, in Deliverance. He didn't need years of training at elite schools because he brought the craft he'd learned on regional stages in Kentucky.
He was never a heartthrob.
His build was that of an ordinary guy next door, a heavyset man who could be the best friend or the most vicious of sadists. But that lack of star qualities was precisely what allowed him to work tirelessly for decades. By 1972, he already knew his place was in the second line of fire.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1976, he shot just one scene for Network. It amounted to six minutes of screen time that earned him an Oscar nomination. That sermon on the power of money over nations defines the essence of corporate capitalism. He was paid for a single day of filming and overshadowed much of the main cast with a monologue that seemed dictated by some dark deity.
Because Beatty understood that film was, above all, a job. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he took part in projects as varied as Superman in 1978 and The World According to Garp in 1982. In the first, he played Otis, the clumsy assistant to Lex Luthor, proving he wasn't afraid to look like a clown if the script called for it.
Before accepting a role, he read the contract before the character's motivations. That earned him the title of Hollywood's busiest actor, according to several publications of the era. He wasn't after glory but after steady work.
In the mid-nineties, his work pace was frantic. He appeared in television series, low-budget TV movies and stage plays. In 1991, he starred in Hear My Song, one of his performances most acclaimed by British critics. But for new generations, his name was etched into 2010 thanks to animation.
He voiced Lotso in Toy Story 3.
That strawberry-scented teddy bear with a tyrant's heart became one of his last major impacts on popular culture. Beatty retired from acting in 2013 after appearing in the film Baggage Claim. He died on June 13, 2021 at his Los Angeles home of natural causes at the age of 83.
He left behind more than 160 screen credits and eight children from four different marriages.
