At age nine, Odeya Rush moved from Haifa to Alabama without speaking a word of English. Her father took a job as a security consultant, and the family settled in a place that felt light-years away from the Mediterranean.
She learned the language by watching movies and obsessively repeating the dialogue in front of the mirror. What began as a survival mechanism turned into a craft before she came of age.
Acting wasn't a choice but a necessity for fitting in.
In 2012, she landed her first major role in The Odd Life of Timothy Green after a series of brief auditions in New York. Disney saw in her gaze an intensity reminiscent of the actresses of Hollywood's golden age, but with a far rawer energy.
In 2014, she starred in The Giver. Working alongside Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep at just seventeen was a trial by fire that few names of her generation could have endured without breaking.
But the Los Angeles studio system tends to typecast young actresses quickly. In 2015, she starred in Goosebumps alongside Jack Black, and the movie performed well at the global box office, earning 158 million dollars.
Commercial mainstream films seemed like her inevitable destiny.
Despite million-dollar offers for youth franchises, she chose projects where the script carried more weight than visual effects. So she began writing her own stories and directing experimental short films during breaks from shoots.
Greta Gerwig called her to join Lady Bird in 2017. She played Jenna Walton, and her work was key to understanding the social hierarchy of the high school depicted in the film. From that moment on, creative control became her absolute priority.
In 2018, she appeared in Dumplin’ for Netflix. Critics praised her ability to avoid the popular-girl stereotype and give the character a humanity that was not written into the original script.
The risk paid off artistically.
During 2022, she took on two projects with opposing profiles that defined her maturity on screen. In Umma she explored psychological horror, while in Cha Cha Real Smooth she immersed herself in the Sundance circuit. Apple TV+ bought the latter film for 15 million dollars after seeing the potential of its cast.
The shoot of Dangerous Waters in 2023 was marked by real tragedy after the sudden death of actor Ray Liotta during production in the Dominican Republic. The film was completed months later on a tight budget, amid a mood of professional grief on the set.
