John Michael Osbourne was locked up for six weeks in Winson Green Prison because he couldn't come up with 25 pounds to pay a fine for theft. He was 1966 at the time, and in his cell he tattooed the letters O-Z-Z-Y across the knuckles of his left hand using a sewing needle and scraped graphite. That dyslexic kid, fresh from gutting cattle in an Aston slaughterhouse, seemed destined for the factory-town fate of England's Midlands.

Two years later, he founded Black Sabbath with three neighbors from his working-class neighborhood.

The quartet lowered the tuning of their guitars, adopted the tritone that medieval liturgical music had shunned, and built the rhythmic foundations of heavy metal. Osbourne delivered a flat, nasal, desperate wail over Tony Iommi's heavy progressions, while the band's lyrics sidestepped the psychedelic optimism of the late sixties to depict the Vietnam War, madness and industrial hopelessness.

The Ruin in Los Angeles and the Miracle of Randy Rhoads

In the spring of 1979, the band kicked Osbourne out in a Hollywood hotel because he was unable to rehearse sober. He spent three months locked in a dark room, drinking cheap alcohol and using cocaine, until Sharon Arden broke down the door of the room. She took over the singer's legal representation, cleaned his wounds and pushed him to form a band of his own.

At the Los Angeles auditions, he signed Randy Rhoads, a 23-year-old guitarist with classical training who turned Osbourne's sketches into precise pieces of heavy rock.

And the gamble paid off.

The album Blizzard of Ozz sold more than five million copies in the United States despite legal harassment from conservative groups who accused it of inciting suicide over the track Suicide Solution. Rhoads's tragic death in 1982, when a twin-engine plane crashed, devastated the singer emotionally, but the commercial machine kept cruising with top-tier replacement musicians.

The Home Screen and Reality TV

At the start of the new century, Osbourne was already showing obvious tremors and severe physical wear after decades of addiction and car accidents. But the entertainment business had an unexpected twist in store. In 2002, MTV premiered The Osbournes, a reality series that set up fixed cameras in his Beverly Hills home and showed, without filters, the daily life of a rock star dazed by remote controls and household pets.

The format took off around the world and wrapped up its first season with eight million weekly viewers.

The film industry leaned into his caricatured persona in family movies and absurd comedies. He lent his voice to animated films such as Gnomeo & Juliet in 2011 and Trolls World Tour in 2020, and also made brief cameos in Little Nicky in 2000 and Austin Powers in Goldmember in 2002. Away from the comedy spotlight, his neurological problems were getting worse.

The Studio as a Last Physical Refuge

In January 2020, Osbourne revealed that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. The aftereffects of a home fall in 2019 damaged the metal implants he had carried in his spine since a quad bike crash in 2003, which wiped out his physical stamina on stage.

So he dug in at the recording studio.

In 2020, he released Ordinary Man, produced by Andrew Watt, with contributions from Elton John. In 2022, he delivered Patient Number 9, an album with guitar work by Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton that won two Grammy Awards in rock categories. In October 2024, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for a second time to honor his solo catalog.

On February 1, 2023, he permanently canceled all remaining dates on his European farewell tour because his skeletal structure could no longer handle the logistics of life on the road.

Trivia about Ozzy Osbourne

Things you probably didn't know about Ozzy Osbourne

During a meeting with a CBS executive in 1981, Ozzy Osbourne tried to lighten the mood with such eccentric behavior that, according to his autobiography and Sharon's account, he ended up marching across the table and urinating in the executive's glass. He did not clearly remember what happened because he was so drunk.
In 1981, during a radio interview, he brought two doves with the intention of releasing them as a symbol of peace, but ended up biting the head off one of them. He later explained that he was completely drunk.
In 1982, he bit off the head of a bat that someone had thrown into the crowd during a performance. Osbourne thought it was a rubber toy, but the animal was alive and had to receive medical treatment because of the possibility of rabies.
The song "Changes" earned him his first No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart when he recorded it as a duet with his daughter Kelly while he was recovering in the hospital.
His wife, Sharon Osbourne, is the daughter of Don Arden, former manager of Black Sabbath. Working with her helped revive his solo career after he left the band.
Ozzy Osbourne was one of the first rock musicians to turn his family life into a television phenomenon with the show "The Osbournes," starring him, Sharon, Kelly and Jack.
In 2001, he collaborated with Rob Zombie on the song "Iron Head," and Zombie later directed the music video for Osbourne's "Dreamer."
His first solo album, "Blizzard of Ozz," released in 1980, included "Crazy Train," a song whose guitar intro became one of the most recognizable riffs in heavy metal.

Quotes by Ozzy Osbourne

  • If you want to be fucking individual, don't get a tattoo. Every fucker's got one these days.
  • Ozzy Osbourne: My son, Jack Osbourne, gets pissed off sometimes. He said to me one day, “Dad, the difference is whether people are laughing with you or at you.” I said, “As long as they’re laughing, it doesn’t matter.”
  • I grew up in Aston, a neighborhood in Birmingham, right at the poverty line. I always felt shitty and intimidated by everyone. So my whole thing was to act crazy and make people laugh so they wouldn't jump on me.
  • I am a new and reformed Christian follower, I Love God
  • David Fricke: Given your own history of substance abuse, what have you said to your children about drugs and alcohol?
  • My problem is that by the time I understood a little bit about life, I was well on the way to fucking burnout.
