Paige

The ring in the living room

Saraya-Jade Bevis grew up among ring ropes and the smell of liniment in Norwich. Her parents were professional wrestlers who ran a small local promotion in England. There was never any real choice for her.

At first, she didn't want to be part of the family business. But at thirteen, she had to replace a wrestler who didn't show up to one of her father's events. That night in 2005 changed her outlook forever.

She signed with WWE in 2011 under the name Paige. The company sent her to Florida to train in its developmental system before making the jump to national television. There she honed an aggressive style that clashed with the prevailing aesthetic in the United States.

In April 2014, she made her main roster debut on an episode of Monday Night Raw in New Orleans. She won the women's championship on her first official night, in front of thousands of people.

It was a real turning point.

Her image was different from that of the models who filled the women's division at the time. Pale skin and black leather outfits. Audiences were looking for something that departed from the traditional standards of TV beauty in the 1990s.

Film as a lifeline

In 2017, she suffered a serious neck injury during an event on Long Island. A blow from behind cut short her competitive career in a sudden and traumatic way. She had to officially announce her retirement in April 2018, at just twenty-five years old.

Stephen Merchant directed Fighting with My Family in 2019. The film follows her rise from the working-class neighborhoods of England to stardom in the United States. Florence Pugh played the wrestler on the big screen.

The production had financial backing and a cameo from Dwayne Johnson. The film earned 39 million dollars at box offices worldwide and won praise from specialized critics.

And the gamble paid off.

After years of behind-the-scenes roles on television programs, her WWE contract ended in July 2022. The company decided not to renew the working relationship after more than a decade together.

Return and business reality

In September 2022, she made a surprise appearance for rival promotion AEW under her real name, Saraya. Doctors cleared her to compete again after five years of total inactivity due to her cervical problems.

She won the women's world title for her new company in August 2023. She did it in front of 81,035 fans at Wembley Stadium, in her home country.

But the road has not been easy since then. Criticism of her physical performance after surgery has been constant on internet forums. She ignores the comments and focuses on running her own cosmetics and clothing brand.

She knows that the entertainment business is fleeting.

In 2024, she has a recurring role on the weekly cable TV lineup in the United States. Her current contract with Tony Khan's company officially expires in the last quarter of 2025.
